The fireplace is the focal point of this bright and open living room. The Noir Honed limestone tile with its subtle silver veining creates a stunning harth with lots of visual texture. The dark fireplace against the white wall creates a solid base, which is balanced by the large abstract painting above.
In a house dubbed Chef’s Delight, you know the kitchen is going to be the star. Of course, the delight of this house is that it boasts not one but two kitchens with gorgeous tile choices in both. The primary kitchen features the Antique Mirror Bevel Glass tile above the stove. This reflective tile adds depth and shine to the room and complements the linear forms of the hood.
This second kitchen, or scullery kitchen, features more brilliant design choices. The Noir Honed tile (which we saw earlier on the fireplace) is paired with the Silver Mist honed limestone tile for a sophisticated checkerboard pattern. As Julie explained in the video, the linear veining on this tile creates a pattern within a pattern, but the Silver Mist tile is installed in alternating diagonals to maintain a sense of order and flow.
The Brick x Brick by Alison Victoria Powder blends blue and grey tones for an elegant backsplash that complements both the dark grey walls and grey and black floor tiles. Though the obvious choice for this backsplash might have been to use the same limestone tile as the floor, we’re glad Julie took a risk on this unexpected tile choice. The blue-grey elongated subway tile creates a beautiful transition between the white cabinets and granite countertops.
This gorgeous bar area is perfect for entertaining. The Look Avio handmade-look tile features variations in its blue-green coloring for a natural sense of movement. While handmade tiles often feature uneven edges, these handmade-look tiles have more uniformity, allowing for the neat straight lines accentuated by the white grout. The result is a highly designed look that creates order without being overly homogeneous.
Nothing is more luxurious than marble, and this primary bathroom uses the Firenze Carrara to optimal effect, creating a clean, classic space. The herringbone pattern adds interest in the floor while maintaining the elegance of the room and the marble’s grey veining pairs nicely with the wooden cabinets and intricate, antique rug.
The Firenze Carrara tile extends to the shower walls, creating a lush, luxurious and rejuvenating space.
Don’t you long to linger between loads in this lovely and inviting laundry room? The floral motif of the Elaizig Hex tile adds sophisticated whimsy to this room. We love how the bee prints above the sink tie in both thematically and aesthetically with the floral-inspired patterned tile.
The custom tile design created with the Black and White Quarter Round tile is an unexpected moment that adds character to this charming Jack and Jill bathroom. The simple color palette gives this room depth while allowing the floor tile to claim the focal point of the space.
The Imperial Black Matte Rhombus tile used in this charming kids’ bathroom proves that you can have fun in black and white. The shape is simple, yet playful–perfect for children–but can easily age as kids grow. With the right accessories, this room is suitable for young kids all the way up to teenagers and young adults.
That concludes our tour of the elegantly chic Chef’s Delight. We hope you loved Julie’s design choices as much as we did! ]]>We invite you to take a tour through this charming and stately home brimming with inspiring design choices that showcase some of our favorite tile.
Comfort and elegance combine to create this charming mudroom. Contemporary, yet timeless the Laura Ashley Wicker Dove Grey tile provides balance to the bold reddish-brown walls and intricately patterned window coverings.
A wealth of beautiful textures and patterns meld to create intrigue and allure in this bold, yet pleasing powder room. The sculptural Harmony Silverleaf tile adds visual interest to the ceiling and complements the hanging crystals. While the soft white Meram Blanc Carra tile center the lower-half of the room in sleek comfort that contrasts the large floral wallpaper.
The elegant and classic Meram Blanc Carrara polished tile, rustic mirror, light-wood cabinetry and organic accents combine complex textures for a look that is both captivating and inviting.
For the indoor/outdoor living area, Kelli takes a more minimalist approach. The bright white walls and Siberian Pearl Brushed marble floors create an airy open space filled with natural light. A simple color palette keeps focus on the seating area, where family and friends can gather.
The kitchen is the heart of any home, and a place to find nourishment and build memories. The white counters and cabinetry work with the Retro Lino backsplash to make the space feel clean and vivid. The glass doors display the dishware for a lived-in feel.
The clear coat glaze on the Retro Lino subway tile reflects the light, providing extra illumination to the cooking area. Check out our post on Kitchen Backsplash Ideas for more inspiration.
Soak in the lush neutral tones that create an opulent space, at once soft and bright. The brown veining in the Tresana Blanco Matte porcelain tile bring out the room’s color palette with subtle appeal that doesn’t detract from the bathroom’s clean luxuriousness. Browse our wide-assortment of bathroom tile for the perfect look for your next home project.
This blue-plaid room invokes a classic boyhood feel. Straight lines and a monochromatic color scheme maintain a sense of order while still being youthful. The white grout line crossing through the Splendours Blue Night shower tile is an inverse to the white and blue wallpaper (find more shower tile on our website). While the more uniform Glass Nautical Blue backsplash creates a block of color that is strong without detracting from the rest of the room.
The subtle sheen of the Ionic White floor tile provides a sturdy, unassuming base to the patterns that play throughout the room.
What guest wouldn’t feel at home stepping into this gorgeous shower? The Bulevar White ceramic tile has a subtle wavy texture that soothes the senses. The clean white tile also provides a gentle buffer between the bold patterned wallpaper and the marvelous McQueen Grey stone mosaic tile accent.
The Legno limestone tile mimics the look of woodgrain to create an organic texture that is also durable. A warm grey palette and linear veining complement the textured accents in the cabinets and wall sconces. Read our post for even more luxurious bathroom design ideas.
The focal point of the home is this stunning bar. At once contemporary and reminiscent of retro glamor, the Antique Mirror Bevel tile and gorgeous gold and glass hanging lights are captivating without being obtrusive, making this the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail with friends.
The Antique Mirror Bevel tile reflects the fireplace and billiards room beyond, creating depth while still maintaining the intimacy of the space.
Laundry is less of a chore in this beautifully designed room with its fresh, clean aesthetic. The soft blue and white color palette lend a calmness to this space. The solid, simple coloring of the walls and cabinetry bring a balance that allow for more interest in the floor tile, Decora Ornament Blue, which brings a sophisticated charm to the room.
The Art Nouveau-inspired design on the Decora Redondo cement-look wall tile lend a classic elegance to this pool bathroom. The grey shapes perfectly balance the blue coral and candle used to accent the sink area, giving the room a subtle aquatic feel.

]]>The post Chris Loves Julia’s Modern Colonial Marble Bathroom appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>Inspired by one of the first DIY projects they tackled in their new North Carolina Modern Colonial home – a custom penny round floor pattern for the powder room – Julia created a similar look in this space with 1″ hex tiles made of matte black porcelain and Hampton Carrara marble.
This tile project ended up being the most intricate but also one of the most beautiful tile jobs we have done in a home.
–Julia Marcum
So, aside from walls lined in Hampton Carrara subway tile and the striking custom floor pattern, what is it that elevates this bathroom from beautiful to breathtaking? Trim. Trim. And more trim. While these small tile accents may seem subtle, this design proves how much impact they really can have. The sleek black pencil liner draws the eye throughout the space and offers the perfect amount of contrast, while the marble durand adorns walls with dimension and interest in the form of elegant box trim.

]]>The post 6 Major Design Trends for 2022 appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>One of the most prominent overall themes we’re seeing in 2022 is the embrace of soft, comforting elements–and color is no exception! While bright whites and cool-toned greys are tried-and-true options, there’s been a definite shift towards warmer, richer color palettes recently. Creamy whites, taupes, beiges, and browns are quickly becoming the new go-to hues for the cozy, inviting atmosphere they instantly lend to any space.
With many of us spending increased time at home, it has become more important than ever to bring elements of the outdoors in. Intricate floral patterns like those displayed in our Morris & Co Pure Net tiles give a nod to the charm of the English countryside, while options from our Laura Ashley and Annie Selke collections feature a variety of grounded, earthy tones and beautiful botanicals. Create an oasis-like bathroom with soft blues and muted greys that evoke the calming sense of the ocean, or achieve an invigorating atmosphere with bold greens and leafy prints that speak to the lush essence of a tropical rainforest.
Dive into the trend of coastal-inspired blues and greens for even more ideas!
One of our favorite recent trends that is only growing more popular in 2022, handmade-look tile brings an effortlessly whimsical feel to any design with its unique artisanal style. Beautifully imitating the nuances found in tile that’s authentically crafted by hand, such as uneven surface texture and color variation, this style creates one-of-a-kind dimension and interest while maintaining a softer overall appearance.
Learn more about the special characteristics of handmade-look tile, and see some of our favorite spaces featuring it, here.
If you’re looking for an easy way to create a striking focal point, sculptural tile is your answer! While it’s true that sculptural/3D tile has been around for a number of years, it’s certainly having a moment in 2022 as designers and DIY-ers are embracing texture and utilizing tile as a true artistic element like never before. With styles ranging from bold geometric patterns to gentle flowing waves, you’re sure to find the perfect option to achieve that wow-factor.
We have a more in-depth breakdown of the sculptural tile trend here, where you can also see it used in a range of unique spaces.
Continuing the theme of soft and comforting elements is the use of more organic shapes. Whether it’s through tile installations, structural designs, fixtures or decor pieces, you’re sure to see more curved lines, rounded shapes and arched details this year. In contrast to ultra-modern design that offers a sense of order and structure with crisp lines and rigid elements, organic shapes tend to feel approachable and harmonious by representing a more natural state, instantly easing the atmosphere in any room.
Keep an eye on our new arrivals as we have a number of gorgeous tiles coming (very!) soon that fit this trend perfectly.
As more and more people are reinventing their style and taking creative risks–which we love to see–the final trend we’re highlighting for 2022 is custom tile patterns. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to the one-of-a-kind designs you can achieve – all you need is a little creativity!
If you’re looking for help getting started, we’ve got an entire blog post dedicated to our favorite custom tile patterns that’ll be sure to spark some inspiration.
That’s a wrap on these six major trends for 2022! We hope you’re feeling inspired and energized to try something new in your next design. If the last few years taught us anything, however, it’s the importance of having a home that brings you joy, comfort, and inspiration. So keep in mind that the ultimate design trend is creating a space that reflects you. Cheers to more beautiful, meaningful spaces in 2022!

]]>We’re thrilled to reveal the first four of eight total spaces that we sponsored during the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge™! From creating custom tile patterns to utilizing one-of-a-kind layouts, we are beyond inspired by the design expertise these featured designers showcased in just eight short weeks. Prepare to swoon over some spectacular before-and-afters, and make sure to keep an eye out for Part 2 of reveals coming soon!
We’re kicking things off with a bathroom transformation that has a major wow factor completed by Bari Ackerman of Bari J Designs. Dubbing it her Deco Dreams Primary Bathroom, Bari turned this everyday bathroom into a true work of art through intricate tile design, playful colors, and a balance of unique shapes.
Can you believe this is the same space?! Complete with tiled arches, a fluted vanity, and Bari’s signature floral decor, this bathroom is a whimsical dream. Featuring our Imperial Ivory Matte Hex and Imperial Pink Gloss Hex, the artistic backsplash takes center stage and displays incredible craftsmanship.
I wanted this room to have somewhat of an art deco feel with the arches…This room is really all about the shapes and color.
-Bari
Knowing she wanted the design to play off of shape, Bari chose the small hexagon tiles for the way they contrast the curves of the arches, mirrors, and lighting fixtures while still reading round overall.
While it would be easy to assume the pink arches are simply painted, it’s clear in the detail shot below just how precisely each of the pink and white hexagons were cut and installed in order to line up perfectly with one another.
To border the lower half of the bathroom walls, Bari chose our classic Imperial Ivory Matte subway tile – with a twist. Using unconventional grout lines–running thicker horizontally and thinner vertically–she was able to achieve added dimension and visual interest. We love the unique style!

After 14 years of living in her home, Ariene Bethea of Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio decided it was time for a full kitchen refresh, with the goal of creating a space that felt sleek, modern and clean. No surprise – she totally hit the mark!
A classic for a reason, Ariene utilized a black and white color palette for her updated kitchen. To create striking contrast against the deep black cabinetry, she chose our crisp Herringbone Gloss White mosaic for her backsplash, turning it diagonally for a more contemporary look.
Learn all about designing with black and white tile on our blog!
It was important to balance the black cabinets with enough white elements, so I selected a herringbone mosaic from The Tile Shop. The clean, modern and simple design feels fresh, yet timeless.
-Ariene
To emphasize the dimension featured in the herringbone pattern, Ariene used a whisper gray gout color that also pulled out the beautiful grey hues in the quartz countertop.
Stunning brass details sprinkled throughout the space provide the perfect amount of warmth and glamour!

After leaving the kitchen area in her basement mostly untouched since moving into her house four years ago, Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges knew it was finally time for an update. She yearned for a space that felt warm, playful, and cozy – perfect for family and friends to gather in. We were thrilled to sponsor Racheal throughout this challenge and help bring her vision to life!
Say hello to Racheal’s new basement kitchen! We absolutely adore the creativity displayed in this space, especially when it comes to the checkerboard backsplash.
Interestingly enough, Racheal’s original design called for an all-grey backsplash using our Riad Grey ceramic tile. After reviewing the space, however, she realized it needed more white elements incorporated for balance and brightness. Racheal came back to us with an updated design idea – to create a custom checkerboard layout using both Riad Grey and Riad White, which we were absolutely delighted about!
The Riad tiles feature beautiful texture and color variation from piece to piece, giving them an authentic handmade look. Explore our full selection of handmade-look tile on our website!
To play off of the grey and white tiles, Racheal painted the floor of her dining area with a similar checkerboard pattern in coordinating colors. It’s such a unique design element that really pulls the space together!
I’m so deeply in love with this backsplash. It’s playful and adds so much life to a kitchen that could have felt a little too mature for my taste. This keeps the kitchen fresh and adds new life to the antique appliances and furniture in the space.

Since moving into a brand new home nine years ago, Susan Hill of Susan Hill Interior Design has worked to make it a place that feels like a true reflection of her and her family. When asking her daughters what space they’d prefer she redesigned for this season of One Room Challenge™, they both immediately agreed on the playroom. Once fitting for the girls’ childhood, the dated space was no longer functional for the now-teenagers. Susan knew this was the perfect opportunity to create a tech-friendly gaming room that was warm and relaxing for the entire family to spend time in.
The result? This fabulously fun gaming room, complete with a snack bar, LED lighting, and all the charging stations her kids could ever need for their electronics!
When it came to the room’s color palette, Susan incorporated a variety of monochromatic hues to create a soothing atmosphere, while grounding the space with charcoal grey accents.
Have you ever seen a cuter snack bar?!
One of the biggest items on her kids’ gaming room wishlist, this chic little snack nook is complete with a beverage fridge, floating shelves, and a playful backsplash featuring our Terrazo Bianco Macro porcelain tile.
Displaying a lively blend of black, pastel, and neutral hues, this terrazzo-look tile complements the space’s color scheme while adding just the right amount of movement and dimension.

]]>The post Fall 2020 One Room Challenge™ Reveal appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>Welcome back for our favorite time of year – the start of the One Room Challenge™! To celebrate the launch of the spring season, we’re revealing the six stunning bathroom transformations that took place last fall. Get ready to feast your eyes on some truly incredible spaces that were completed in just eight weeks!
We’re starting off strong with this whimsical boho bathroom designed by Brooke Pavel. When Brooke and her family moved into their modular home, the primary bath was pretty bleak with no flooring and dated fixtures, so she decided to completely gut it and create a brand new space that felt inspiring and cozy. The natural wood details, gold accents, and light color palette make this bathroom an absolute dream!
Brooke decided on the Picket Florencia Super Bianco for both her walls and shower surround. The elongated hex shape brings a cool, refreshing element to the space.
We are blown away by this vanity before and after! The black-rimmed mirrors create a gorgeous point of contrast against the space’s creamy tones.
Tiled from top to bottom, this shower is a game-changer when it comes to getting a spa-like experience at home! We love the blend of hex and picket tiles throughout – a natural color scheme allows for a lot more freedom when it comes to combining unique shapes and styles!
Follow along with all of Brooke’s DIY projects over on her instagram!
Next, we go bold with color and pattern in this exciting bathroom renovation by Zig & Co. Courtney decided to keep the bathroom’s original vanity, which was custom-made by her husband years prior. It just needed a splash of sunny yellow paint, a few trim pieces, and a fun butterfly inset to really come to life in the new space!
This challenge I was inspired by color. I love to mix bold colors and patterns with a touch of whimsy.
Courtney
While the entire room was designed around the unique butterfly wallpaper, Courtney didn’t want the small space to feel too overpowered by it, so she incorporated a 5 ft. board-and-batten wall into the design for some balance.
Originally, Courtney hadn’t planned on updating the flooring, but when she was presented with the Cloth Black and White tile, she knew it was perfect for the space. The classic black-and-white color palette effortlessly grounds the rest of the space, plus it accentuates the fabulous black freestanding tub!
This space proves a mix of bold colors and patterns can be pulled together in a cohesive, breathtaking design!
See the entire transformation over on Zig & Co.
Camila of Effortless Style Interiors brings us another exciting, colorful bathroom transformation, this time with some lighter pastels. While in the process of completely renovating her new home, Camila decided the main bathroom on her second floor would be the perfect contender for the One Room Challenge™.
[I focused] on bringing in an amazing shade of yellow with the help of The Tile Shop and their Color Market collection. The Lima da Persia colorway is a perfect citron yellow/green and I’m so happy I decided to go for it!
Camila
She decided to incorporate two shower niches into her new space so that she and her husband, Jon, could use one for their belongings, while leaving the second one open for their two sons to share.
We love a bold wallpaper moment and this bathroom definitely doesn’t disappoint! The Ava with Victoria Mosaic flooring offers just the right amount of balance with a neutral color scheme and geometric pattern.
Hear all about this 8-week transformation from Camila herself at Effortless Style Interiors.
When Kelly of Plot Twist Design moved into her new home, the entire place had been completely updated. While the powder bathroom was functional, she wanted to elevate the space with a little more style and drama.
While planning the updated design, she knew she wanted black flooring, but was faced with making the decision between marble or man-made.
The Black Marquina Polished Marble tile by The Tile Shop won hands down. While marble will require a little more attention, the shine and natural veins are unmatched. Also, smaller spaces with less traffic can [withstand] marble with much less fuss.
Kelly
We absolutely adore the printed wallpaper Kelly chose for this space – while soft and neutral, it brings a fun element of character and looks stunning paired with the bathroom’s gold hardware!
Get all the details on this powder bath transformation over at Plot Twist Design.
The final reveal of the Fall One Room Challenge™ is this moody, French gothic-inspired primary bathroom. Determined to keep the vanity, countertops, and mirror, Jessica of Domicile 37 had a specific vision for the space, which had last been updated in 1990. However, she knew the bathroom needed some major demoing, starting with the removal of the massive jacuzzi-style bathtub.
While the original plan was a warm, vintage-style design using the Macchia Vecchia tile, Jessica ended up pivoting to Invisible Grey, which she ended up loving even more!
The Invisible Grey used on the walls throughout gives the bathroom an especially lavish, luxurious feel.
I wanted a cohesive look to this space and I wanted the tile to make sense and be aesthetically purposeful.
Jessica
Jessica found a number of brass and antique pieces to add to the decor in the space, giving it a moody, dramatic feel.
Get a full rundown of Jessica’s bathroom transformation at Domicile 37.
That’s a wrap on the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge™ Reveal! Make sure you’re following us on Instagram to keep up with the eight transformations taking place this season.
