]]>Large-format tile requires fewer grout lines, which makes a small space feel more cohesive. Featured on the floor and half-wall of this bathroom, the Livingstone Melange tile creates the illusion of an expansive space by maintaining an almost continuous design. Shop our wide assortment of large-format tile for more big ideas.
A powder bathroom is generally smaller, less frequently used and more guest-facing than your primary bathroom, making it the perfect space to experiment with bold colors and patterns. Here, the Nikki Chu Zulu Graphite tile adds a playful element to this small bathroom, while the modern sink vanity and fixtures maintain an elevated design. Explore our wide assortment of patterned tile to find the style that expresses your unique personality.
Want to make your small space feel invigorating? Mixing tile styles or materials gives your eye more to focus on, providing a stimulating start to your day. This cool, contemporary bathroom demonstrates how to layer looks without feeling too busy. Though there are five separate tiles (not including trim), there are only three colors: blue, taupe and white. The use of white grout in the grid-stacked Look Avio subway tile creates a visual throughline to the white wall and shower floor tiles and the white geometric lines featured on the Ragno Taupe Matte floor tile.
You don’t need to spend a lot for a major room refresh. Achieve big-impact style on a small budget with The Tile Shop’s newly expanded collection of tiles under $7. Handmade-look, wood-look, large-format and more–you’ll be surprised at the wealth of design possibilities available for any price range. This fashionable bath, designed by @homewithhay, features the Cool Blue wall tile. Priced at just $6.99/sq.ft., this handmade-look tile is both on trend and within budget.
Inherently dynamic and energetic, diagonal lines create the illusion of a wider room. When installed diagonally, picket tile disrupts the symmetry of your space–perfect for adding interest to a minimalist design. We love how this bathroom wall maintains subtlety by pairing the Lanse Matte Black Picket tile with black grout.
If stepping outside gives you a mood boost, bring that serotonin-inducing scenery indoors with nature-inspired colors, materials and designs. Even if your bathroom isn’t large enough for live plants, incorporating a botanical pattern–like the Morris & Co. Hawkdale Willow Olive tile–can offer some of the same benefits as actual greenery. For more ideas on bringing the beauty of the outdoors into your home, check out this guide to biophilic design.
Effortlessly chic and timeless, white subway tile is the white tee of interior design–it goes with everything! You can dress up this classic by pairing it with a mosaic or patterned tile, just like @alexandria.by.design did in this space featuring the Asteri floor tile. The simple black-and-white color scheme makes the space easy to update as styles and tastes change. Simply swapping out the shower curtain can completely alter the bathroom’s aesthetic.
A confined space makes your walls more susceptible to moisture and inevitable bathroom messes. A beautiful (and easy-to-clean!) patterned tile will protect your space from floor to ceiling while providing a stylish wallpaper look. An ornate design, like the Cheverny Blanc tile featured here, achieves delicate artistry with superior durability.
Tile is an inherently hard material, and the straight edges and sharp corners of squares and rectangles can feel rigid. A curved shape–like a penny round tile or the Wave Grey Owl tile shown here–creates the illusion of softness by offering your eye smooth, pillowy lines to focus on. This can make your small space feel cozy and comfortable.
If you’re getting maximum usage from your small bathroom, you want a floor tile that’s durable, easy to maintain, and still makes your space feel luxurious. Ultra-luxe and super robust, marble-look porcelain or ceramic tile is the perfect blend of style and strength. With a wide range of bold to delicate-veined looks to choose from, our ever-expanding selection of marble-look tile offers something for everyone.
Simple and stylish, black-and-white tile pairs well with virtually any design. Whether you choose an elegant marble mosaic or a geometric pattern, this classic color scheme is a great foundation for both a fancy and fun-loving space. This gorgeous powder room, designed by @andreak_covelladesigns, features the Marble Star porcelain floor tile. The intricate design and textured stone appearance add interest without detracting from the beautiful floral wallpaper, antique cabinetry and Victorian painting.
Checkerboard is a timeless trend that doesn’t require a lot of space to make a big impression. Virtually any two similarly sized square tiles (or halved rectangular tiles) can create a design checkmate. We love this elevated version, designed by @MaryLauren, featuring the Arctic White and Bandung Gris Acid marble tiles.
Add needed storage and style with a shower niche. Because niches take up such a small amount of real estate, they’re a great place to experiment with a tile–like a bold pattern or mosaic–that might overwhelm the rest of the room. You can also coordinate your niche with a backsplash or accent wall to enhance the design of your space.
In a small space, it’s even more important for your design to feel cohesive. Using tile to visually align your tub apron with the floor and/or wall will help hide its bulk. This space, designed by A Glass of Bovino, creates unity by featuring the Firenze Calacatta marble on the shower wall and tub.
Another great bathroom tile idea for small showers: if you’re dealing with a low shower ceiling, consider extending the tile to cover overhead. The Splendor Blanco tile used throughout this shower, designed by Coco & Jack, makes the small space feel larger, and the vertical stack provides the illusion of height.
A small space is a great place to showcase your design skills. This boho-chic bathroom, designed by I SPY DIY, demonstrates how a little creativity can go a long way in crafting a space that feels uniquely you. The Villa Warm White and Warm Grey subway tiles are arranged in a custom layout, perfectly complementing the space’s eclectic aesthetic. Get your creative juices flowing with more globally inspired ideas in this guide to boho-chic design.
This guest bathroom, designed by Nikki Chu, proves that your space doesn’t need to be large to be luxurious. We love how she went all-in with floor-to-ceiling Ashford Carrara. Since the space is limited, this opulent look is achievable on a less-than-extravagant budget. Explore marble tile to find elegant natural stone collections, featuring coordinating field tiles, mosaics and trim pieces.
If your bathroom is left over from the last century, embrace its vintage charm! This bathroom, designed by Yellow Brick Home, maintains the classic pink sink and chrome fixtures but updates the tile with period-appropriate white subway tile and black pencil trim. The Hampton Niles marble mosaic floor tile features a black-and-white basketweave–a slightly modern twist on a classic design.
When working with a small space, it can be helpful to focus attention on one wall. Designer Kelli Fontana subverts expectations by making the wall the reflective element in this stylish powder room. The clever use of the Antique Mirror Bevel tile allows the window to become the focal point, while still providing the opportunity for a quick lipstick check.
An intricate mosaic tile creates a sense of flow and rhythm, making your space feel larger. A marble mosaic, like the Alison Victoria Elia Polished tile shown here, features distinct variations in veining and color from piece to piece, offering lush appeal and lively visual texture. Shop our wide selection of mosaic tile in a variety of styles and materials to achieve this stunning look.
Updating your space is easier than you think! Shop our wide assortment of bathroom tile for a wealth of popular styles, or explore even more bathroom tile ideas. Need more assistance? Visit your local Tile Shop showroom, where you’ll find the tile, tools and expert advice you need to get started.

]]>As classy as it is cheery, a checkerboard pattern will add some fun and whimsy to your space. And this versatile pattern needn’t be relegated to black-and-white floors. Any square-shaped tile can make a checkerboard, so you can mix colors and patterns to create a winning design. You can even stay neutral like Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges did for this grey and white checkerboard backsplash. We love how the handmade look tile adds texture to this kitchen wall, and how she used color to create a dopamine-inducing tableau.
A lot of colors can easily become overwhelming. To keep your room from becoming too busy, try sticking to two to three analogous colors (colors that are close to each other on the color wheel). That’s what Zig and Co. did in this bright and fun entryway. A lot is happening in this room, but there are only three colors–blue, green and yellow–which helps keep the room looking cohesive.
You don’t need to saturate an entire room to showcase your favorite color. A somerset or pencil trim will add a pop of color that can tie into other elements in the room or just provide a point of interest in an otherwise neutral space. This laundry room, designed by At Home With Ashley, uses a single line of pink pencil trim to add color to the marble subway tile design. While Ashley also uses a pink floral wallpaper in this space, a white or neutral colored wall would match the tile just as well.
A black-and-white tile complements virtually any color palette–a great choice if you’re considering dipping your toe into dopamine decor. This vibrant room, designed by Timber Trails, pairs the Firenze Carrara Polished Wheaton with Black marble tile with a hot pink walls. The color saturation is excellent but can be easily altered with a new coat of paint.
Shape is another way to bring joy to a space. This Art Deco-inspired bathroom, designed by Bari J. Ackerman, uses tile to create a glamorous backsplash. The tiled arches mimic the rounded shapes of the mirrors and light fixtures, while the individual hexagon tiles add to the vintage allure of this charming room. You can use tile to create shapes, or choose from a uniquely shaped tile for an unexpected look that will brighten your mood.
A bold pattern is a great way to infuse your space with fun and cheer. If you’re worried about overwhelming the room, use a neutral or solid color on the other surfaces. The Laura Ashley Sunflower Charcoal with Cloud Blue patterned floor tile shown here, pairs well with the Laura Ashley White Beveled wall tile for a space that is bright and fanciful, while still being tasteful. Explore our wide assortment of patterned tile to discover a design that fills you with happiness.
Even the most charming, joy-filled room can use a place to rest your eye. A neutral tile, whether on the floor or the wall can provide some respite in a busy room. The Baltimore Beige Wood Look tile floor in this room designed by At Home With Ashley, adds to the charm of the pretty nature-inspired wallpaper, without distracting. Wood-look tile and luxury vinyl tile are perfect for adding realistic charm to your space while allowing for more creativity throughout the room.
Wondering where to start on your new dopamine decor space? Try making a moodboard! Think of the objects, colors and accessories that give you the most happiness and energy. Explore tile in your favorite color, or browse our selection of patterned tile for a design that sparks joy. This style is about using everything in your space to create good vibes. If you’ve gathered your inspiration, or even if you need a little help getting started, you can schedule a free design consultation, our friendly Tile Experts are always here to help!

]]>The Casablanca tile takes center stage in this dramatic black-and-white bathroom designed by Timber Trails. We love how they used the Black Marquina Barnes tile as a frame for this beautifully intricate mosaic. This design could feel disconnected from the bathtub, but the placement of the faucet integrates the tile into the functionality of the space.
Haneen’s Haven used their master bath as a place to display their favorite works of art. The many artistic elements in this room, including the star-shaped overhead light and sculpture, showcase their individual style to create a relaxing atmosphere. The Truewood Beige Wood Look tile floor is a simple, yet stately element that blends well with the museum aesthetic of the room.
By separating the shower into a wet room, I Spy DIY created an amazing tub moment in this beautifully tranquil bathroom. The handmade-look Riad Grey wall tiles have natural shifts in tone, creating interest while maintaining a neutral color palette, adding to the peacefulness of the room.
The glossy finish and beautiful color variation on the Tribeca Grey Whisper tile creates a serene space to relax in at the end of a long day. The choice to tile most of the room, including the tub surround, engulfs this bathroom in a restful atmosphere.
This soothing seaside space exudes a feeling of peaceful relaxation. The soft blue design of the Summerland by Jeffery Alan Marks in Miramar tile is reminiscent of faded linen fabric, adding to the charm and tranquility of this bathroom.
The geometric-patterned Artisan Tiare tile proves you don’t need neutrals to be relaxing. Relegating the tile to the floor keeps this space from becoming too busy. The bold orange with the white walls and ceiling allows for unique accessories like the black and gold overhead light.
Keeping with a blue and white color palette, this bathroom designed with all Laura Ashley tile, creates a fun and relaxing space to unwind at the end of a long day. We love how the Laura Ashley Sunflower Charcoal with Cloud Blue tile extends onto the tub surround, adding depth to the room, and how the Leaf Cloud Blue mosaic tile creates an unexpected shower niche moment.
If you’re lucky enough to have architectural elements in your home like this exposed brick chimney wall, incorporating them into your bathroom design will add to the character and charm of your space. The Grit and Polish embraces the rustic natural structures in this amazing bathroom, and the Firenze Carrara Honed marble hexagon floor adds to the warmth and natural texture of the space.
We hope you enjoyed these fabulous bathtub designs. You can find even more inspiration on Instagram and our Customer Room Gallery where our tiles are used in a variety of real spaces! ]]>What is Zellige tile? Crafted in Morocco, each of these tiles is shaped and glazed by hand resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind look. These tiles come in a variety of colors and shapes, including the popular star and cross shapes, bringing old-world charm to contemporary design.
Available in alabaster, black, dark grey, light grey and white, each of these 4″ x 4″ square tiles is handcrafted creating naturally uneven lines and variances in surface color. The effect on these walls is absolutely stunning! These handmade Moroccan tiles are great for creating an unexpected moment like this recessed shelf or to liven up a kitchen backsplash (below). These tiles are also available in 2″ x 6″ rectangles and 2″ x 2″ square mosaic.
This classic Zellige pattern will transform your space with old-world sophistication. Install the cross and stars in contrasting finishes for a unique, but subtle pattern, as shown here with gloss crosses and matte stars.
Do you like the look of handmade tiles, but want a little more continuity? Get the unique character of handmade tiles with less variance in color and size (and a lower price-point) with handmade-look tiles.
These 4″ x 4″ square tiles–available in white, sand and grey–mimic the square Zellige tiles, with uneven edges and variation in color and surface texture, but the differences are not quite as pronounced as in the true handmade tiles. If you like your lines a little more straight and your color a little more uniform, you can’t go wrong with the Riad tile. We love how Rachael Jackson used the Riad White and Grey to create a stunning checkerboard pattern in her kitchen remodel.
The Splendours takes subway tile up a notch with perfectly imperfect character. This tile comes in a variety of colors (as well as the traditional white) to suit your style. For an added twist on a classic subway, try the elongated-hex-shaped picket tile.
The Marrakesh tiles will add a wonderful sense of movement to your walls. Available in white, blue and green, the natural color variation in the tiles makes for beautiful kitchen backsplashes (as evidenced below) but we also love how ISPYDIY created a checkerboard pattern for their shower wall.
Available in dark blues, green and white, the Look elongated handmade-look subway tile comes in bold colors with an artisanal appearance that will add texture and charm to your space. We love how the variations in color add character to this kitchen island.
The slight shade variation in the Track Stack mosaic tiles creates an artisanal look even as the long thin tiles align with beautiful symmetry. If you’re loving this look, check out the Track Stack Navy Blue tiles.
The Annie Selke Artisanal Blue tile shown used in this shower features slightly uneven surfaces for a handcrafted look and unique charm. The slight imperfections add character, but this tile is still even enough to create almost straight lines.
Embrace quiet luxury with the Argile matte subway tile. The slight variations in tone and texture create a handcrafted look that pairs well with the soft, marble-look Livingstone Melange tile.

]]>The post The Best Tiles for Heated Floors appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>Porcelain and ceramic tile have excellent heat transfer properties and are generally thin, which will make your floor heat faster. Porcelain tile is less porous than ceramic, making it more water resistant. For areas prone to wetness, such as bathrooms, entryways and mudrooms, porcelain tile is a perfect choice.
Natural stone, like travertine and marble, is a great option for a heated tile floor. Natural stone tiles tend to be slightly thicker than porcelain and ceramic, so it might take them longer to heat up. The upside is, that they will retain the heat longer than man-made tiles.
Luxury vinyl tile works well with in-floor heat, and it’s easy to install, making this the perfect choice for a DIY project. If you’re looking for an affordable alternative to wood or stone, luxury vinyl tile is a great option.

]]>Jenni Yolo of I Spy DIY took this loft bathroom from drab to dazzling! By dividing the room and installing a stand-alone shower, she created a spa experience in this loft bathroom. We love how the neutral tones of the Riad Grey tile and the Royal White Polished Hex create a calming, peaceful mood and make the bright red accessories pop. For more stunning bathroom ideas, check out 16 Luxurious Bathroom Designs.
For this Jack and Jill style bathroom accessible to both her boys’ rooms, Mackenzie from Craven Haven wanted a look that was at once classic and fun, and we think she nailed it! This bathroom redo captures the charm of boyhood with its simple color scheme and geometric lines, but remove the red step stools and you have a room perfect for teenagers. The Cali Black and White floor tile has a fun, but orderly design, while the Verano Anthracite and White handmade-look subway tile feature a slightly wavy texture and a glossy finish to reflect the light, making the room appear brighter. The black and white tiles mean this room can be easily updated as her kids evolve their style.
As evident by the before photos, this 1915 house required a complete remodel when it was purchased by the couple behind Revival 4106. They used the Cloth Black and White tile for the entryway and back staircase and we love how it complements the black metal light fixture and the muted green of the entryway. This patterned tile, a fun twist on a classic black and white checkerboard, breathes new life into this house!
For her Loft House downstairs bathroom, Jenni Yolo took a risk with bold, dark colors, and we definitely think it’s paid off! The Marrakesh Blue and Off White handmade-look tiles add an artisanal charm to this room. The checkerboard pattern in the shower and the Cross Black and Snow White custom patterned tile on the floor work well together, each providing some respite in what could otherwise be a heavy, dark-colored room. Contrasted with the harsh whites of the before picture, this renovation does an amazing job of creating a room that is at once peaceful and bold.
This utility room designed by Mackenzie of Craven Haven is more than just utilitarian. The Trecento Calacatta Marbello luxury vinyl tile provides good movement with its bold grey veining that mimics natural stone. We love how the off-white base of the tile matches the color on the upper wall, allowing for the deep plumb cabinetry and wainscoting to stand out. Luxury vinyl flooring is easy to install and maintain, making it the perfect choice for a DIY project in a high-traffic area.
Haneen from Haneen’s Haven turned this bathroom from blah to brilliant! Using her artistic sensibilities, she created a room that perfectly blends classic and modern details. The Truewood Beige Wood Look tile adds a warm, organic element to this room. For the shower, she went with a simple black and white color scheme. The Saltus patterned tile creates an unexpected artistic moment in these beautiful shower niches.
The Noir Honed Chevron mosaic tile creates a boldly-stylish moment in this chic family room. The black tile paired with the dark cabinetry is a sophisticated redo in this family space and allows for color to come through elsewhere in the room, like the bright gold couch and wooden coffee table. Subway tile is a staple when it comes to walls and backsplashes, but that doesn’t mean it’s basic. Try installing your subway tile vertically for a modern look that will add height to your walls.
There are few color pairings as classy and bold as black and white. The Casablanca mosaic tile makes for a brilliant centerpiece here, while the black and white marble checkerboard floor exudes simple charm.
Add character and artisanal allure with handmade-look tile like the Splendours White. Handmade-look tiles feature slight color and texture variations that will give your bathroom unique character.
Intricate or orderly, mosaic tile will add beauty and movement to your bathroom. The Kit Kat mosaic features crisp symmetry that creates an ordered appearance, but we have mosaics in a variety of shapes that will add an artistic look to your bathroom.
Bathe your bathroom in ultimate luxury with marble tile. Marble comes in a variety of colors, but we love how classic white like the Firenze Calacatta collection creates a bright and brilliant spa-like room.
Take your white bathroom design up a notch with picket tile. The elongated hexagon shape of is a fun twist on a classic subway that will add a dynamic element to your white walls.
Make your bathroom stand out by adding a pop of color to an all-white room. Whether you use a bright color block like Bari J. Ackerman created with the Imperial Pink Hex or just add a band of colorful trim piece, a single colorful element will add a vibrancy to a white bathroom.

]]>Want to make your floor the focal point? A bold geometric pattern is sure to be a show-stopper. Tie it into other design elements in the room through color or pattern, or use white tile or paint on the walls to keep the floor the main feature. Whether you choose bold colors like the encaustic-look Artisan Tiare tile or a black-and-white design, the clean lines of a geometric tile will make your bathroom feel neat and orderly.
Nothing is more luxurious or unique than natural stone, and no stone exudes elegance quite like marble. Most of our marble collections include tile in a variety of sizes and shapes so you can match a square or rectangular tile with a mosaic to create distinction on the floors while still maintaining cohesion in your space. Designer Nikki Chu has done just that in this bathroom covered in floor to ceiling Ashford Cararra. We love how the smaller format hexagon floor tiles provide some relief from the large-format wall tiles. Read A Step Inside: Nikki Chu’s Neutral-Luxe Total Home Reno for more of her design philosophy and inspiring spaces.
Want a bathroom that radiates beach vibes year-round? Our Summeland by Jeffery Alan Marks tiles, inspired by the California Shoreline, will infuse your bathroom with warm and inviting coastal charm.
Tile doesn’t need to stop where the floor ends. If you’re loving your floor tile, take it up the tub or shower wall. The Laura Ashley Sunflower tile on this tub wall is an unexpected detail that adds charm and character to this bathroom. View more spaces featuring tile inspired by the iconic British brand here.
Want to make a small bathroom appear bigger? Large-format tiles require fewer grout lines, making your floor feel more cohesive and your space more expansive. The 24 x 47 in. Aqua Blu tile used in this bathroom designed by Rashida Banks makes this bathroom feel luxuriously spacious.
If you like the look of marble but not the price point, porcelain marble-look tiles, like the Tresana Blanco used in this gorgeous bathroom designed by Brooke Pavel, are a durable and cost-effective alternative that’s sure to dazzle. We have a wide variety of marble-look tiles ranging from crisp white to black. Choose soft, subtle veining or go dramatic with thick, bold hues. Whatever style, marble-look tiles will add a touch of class and elegance to your floor.
Small and neat penny rounds are as classic as they are chic. We have a wide selection of penny rounds, mounted on a mesh backing for easy installation. Choose a pre-made pattern or create your own using the wealth of colors available. The delightful pattern below designed by Timber Trails was created using the Penny Round White Gloss and the Penny Round Cloudy tiles.
If you want to infuse color in your walls, mirrors or fixtures, a simple black and white tile floor pattern will complement rather than detract from the rest of your room. The Cloth Black and White tile used in this bathroom designed by Zig & Co. adds to the whimsical character of the room while allowing the bright colors and fun butterfly-patterned wallpaper to shine.
Mosaics don’t just make for gorgeously intricate floors, the small tile pieces also require more grout lines, which provides more traction on floors prone to wetness. Mosaic tile comes in a wide variety of shapes–from hexagons to basketweaves to petals and more–and comes on a mesh backing for easy installation. Choose a mosaic in a mix of colors, like the Modena tile in this shower designed by Nikki Chu, to add exciting detail to your floor.
If you want to add character to your floors, a checkerboard pattern is a style that is simultaneously sophisticated and fun. The alternating tiles create a dynamic movement that will enliven your floors with energy and playfulness. Whether you use traditional black and white, a muted white and cream or a bold color paired with a pattern, checkerboard tile is a versatile classic that’s always in style.
Have a wallpaper you love for your bathroom? Pair it with a patterned floor tile. When you keep to the same color palette, you can play with patterns and not clash. A lot is going on in this bathroom designed by Zig and Co., but keeping everything in blue, green and white maintains an intentional design scheme.
If bright and bold isn’t your style, don’t be afraid to embrace a neutral color palette. Beige doesn’t have to be boring–a fun shape and subtle pattern can add interest to a floor without becoming overwhelming. We love how the Blot Noon Hexagon tile creates a pattern that’s as appealing as it is calming.
Want the natural look of wood in your bathroom, but are afraid it will be difficult to maintain in a room prone to wetness?
