Customizing Your Space

We’re sharing our best practices for layering tile to show you how you can take your space to the next level. The look below incorporates a combination of trim pieces and mosaics to transform a simple picture frame into an exquisite focal point.

Since this bathroom uses the Firenze Carrara marble collection throughout, the untrained eye may see it as quite simple. Look carefully at the transitions, and see if you can identify how many trim pieces are actually used to accomplish this sophisticated design.

Incorporating different shapes and sizes from the same tile collection can carry this elevated look through to other areas of the room, such as the backsplash, half wall and shower (photo top left). By sourcing all of the pieces of a collection from the same stone quarry, each piece complements the others for stunning variation that isn’t overbearing. If you have a focal point, repeat the same design element in other areas, like a shower niche (photo top right).

Thoughtful Transitioning

It’s important to think about how each part of your space will work together to form a unified environment. Utilizing trim pieces between different materials, sizes, shapes and textures of tile can create the perfect transition.

Dimensional tile can create dramatic depth and texture, but it can also leave an uneven edge when paired with other selections (top left photo). Incorporating transitional trim pieces will offer a seamless solution from one style to the next. Similarly, they can be used on the floor to separate different areas within a space – the top right photo displays a subtle transition, while the photo below incorporates durable curb pieces for a more prominent separation from shower to floor.

For tiles that vary in size, double up somersets and run them vertically for the greatest impact.

Using transitions is also the perfect way to emphasize an accent tile in your design. In the photo below, layered trim pieces instantly elevate the Brushed Bronze with Glass Metal Mosaic backsplash, while coordinating beautifully with the surrounding ceramic subway tile.

Each trim piece has its own unique characteristics that make it perfect for specific uses.

Coordinating Finishes

Pictured below is an example of how trim and profile pieces can provide an opportunity to coordinate with fixtures. In cases where there’s no need for a transition or storage solution, metal profiles can be used in between tiles as a unique accent that can coordinate with other design elements, such as faucets or lighting.

Layering trim and profile pieces can make every tile design better by adding dimension and interest. It shows that the design has been thoughtfully curated and has the finishing touches that elevate the space from basic to beautiful.

Create a Checkerboard

As classy as it is cheery, a checkerboard pattern will add some fun and whimsy to your space. And this versatile pattern needn’t be relegated to black-and-white floors. Any square-shaped tile can make a checkerboard, so you can mix colors and patterns to create a winning design. You can even stay neutral like Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges did for this grey and white checkerboard backsplash. We love how the handmade look tile adds texture to this kitchen wall, and how she used color to create a dopamine-inducing tableau.

Pick Two to Three Bold Colors

A lot of colors can easily become overwhelming. To keep your room from becoming too busy, try sticking to two to three analogous colors (colors that are close to each other on the color wheel). That’s what Zig and Co. did in this bright and fun entryway. A lot is happening in this room, but there are only three colors–blue, green and yellow–which helps keep the room looking cohesive.

Use a Colorful Trim

You don’t need to saturate an entire room to showcase your favorite color. A somerset or pencil trim will add a pop of color that can tie into other elements in the room or just provide a point of interest in an otherwise neutral space. This laundry room, designed by At Home With Ashley, uses a single line of pink pencil trim to add color to the marble subway tile design. While Ashley also uses a pink floral wallpaper in this space, a white or neutral colored wall would match the tile just as well.

Pair Black and White With a Bold Color

A black-and-white tile complements virtually any color palette–a great choice if you’re considering dipping your toe into dopamine decor. This vibrant room, designed by Timber Trails, pairs the Firenze Carrara Polished Wheaton with Black marble tile with a hot pink walls. The color saturation is excellent but can be easily altered with a new coat of paint.

Have Fun With Shapes

Shape is another way to bring joy to a space. This Art Deco-inspired bathroom, designed by Bari J. Ackerman, uses tile to create a glamorous backsplash. The tiled arches mimic the rounded shapes of the mirrors and light fixtures, while the individual hexagon tiles add to the vintage allure of this charming room. You can use tile to create shapes, or choose from a uniquely shaped tile for an unexpected look that will brighten your mood.

Embrace a Bold Pattern

When working with a small space, it can be helpful to concentrate the focus on one wall. Designer Kelli Fontana added a reflective surface to the wall behind the sink with the Antique Mirror Bevel tile. The clever use of mirrored tile allows the window to be the focal point, subverting expectations while still maintaining the classic structure of a powder room.

2. Create a Shower Niche

Looking for some small bathroom shower tile ideas? Here’s one–add extra shelf space to your and create a beautiful tile moment with a shower niche. Because they take up such a small amount of real estate in the bathroom, niches are a good place to try a tile that would overwhelm the rest of the room–patterned or mosaic tile works particularly well. You can also tie your niche into a backsplash or accent wall, as is shown here with the Winter Morning Athens mosaic.

3. Tile the Tub

If you’re working with limited space, you can get creative about where you place your tile. The tub apron usually goes unadorned, but tiling it will the same tile as the floor or shower will make a bulky tub fade into the background. Alisa from A Glass of Bovino tiled her tub and shower in Firenze Calacatta marble, which helps make the bathing area look like one unified space.

4. Tile the Ceiling

Another great bathroom tile idea for small showers–if you’re dealing with a low shower ceiling, consider extending the tile to cover overhead. The Splendor Blanco tile used throughout this shower designed by Coco & Jack makes the small space feel larger, and the vertical stack creates the illusion of height.

5. Use Large-Format Tile

It can be difficult to know how to tackle your small bathroom floor, but here’s a tile idea that will create the illusion of space. Large-format tile requires fewer grout lines, which can make a small space feel larger. The Livingstone Melange tile used for the floor and half-wall of this bathroom, designed by Nikki Chu, creates the illusion of an expansive space.

6. Go All-Out With Marble

This guest bathroom designed by Nikki Chu proves that your space doesn’t need to be large to be luxurious. We love how she drenched this guest bath in floor-to-ceiling Ashford Carrara. The gorgeous veining in the marble gives this room a sense of depth and movement. The Ashford Carrara, like many of our marble collections, comes in a selection of tiles including trim, so that you can give your space a designed, cohesive look.

7. Use a Dark Floor Tile

You can’t get much smaller than this powder room designed by Kelly Collier-Clark at Plot Twist Design. We love the wallpaper she chose and how she extended it onto the ceiling, but the Black Marquina marble floor tile takes this bathroom to the next level. The polished tile is slightly reflective, adding extra depth and illumination to the small space.

8. Go for a Vintage Look

If your bathroom is left over from the last century, consider embracing its vintage charm. This bathroom, designed by Kim and Scott of Yellow Brick Home, maintains the classic pink sink and chrome fixtures but gives the tile a period-appropriate update with white subway tile and black pencil trim. The Hampton Niles marble mosaic floor tile has a black and white basketweave, a slightly modern twist on a classic design.

9. Embrace Color and Pattern

There’s no reason you can’t go bold in a small space. Choose a color theme and go all out, as Courtney and Aaron of Zig & Co. did for this bright and bold green and blue bathroom. The simple color scheme allows for a wealth of visual elements in this room, but the patterns work with each other rather than compete. I Spy DIY’s Loft Bathroom

Jenni Yolo of I Spy DIY took this loft bathroom from drab to dazzling! By dividing the room and installing a stand-alone shower, she created a spa experience in this loft bathroom. We love how the neutral tones of the Riad Grey tile and the Royal White Polished Hex create a calming, peaceful mood and make the bright red accessories pop. Craven Haven’s Boys’ Bathroom

For this Jack and Jill style bathroom accessible to both her boys’ rooms, Mackenzie from Craven Haven wanted a look that was at once classic and fun, and we think she nailed it! This bathroom redo captures the charm of boyhood with its simple color scheme and geometric lines, but remove the red step stools and you have a room perfect for teenagers. The Cali Black and White floor tile has a fun, but orderly design, while the Verano Anthracite and White handmade-look subway tile feature a slightly wavy texture and a glossy finish to reflect the light, making the room appear brighter. The black and white tiles mean this room can be easily updated as her kids evolve their style.

Entryway by Revival 4106

As evident by the before photos, this 1915 house required a complete remodel when it was purchased by the couple behind Revival 4106. They used the Cloth Black and White tile for the entryway and back staircase and we love how it complements the black metal light fixture and the muted green of the entryway. This patterned tile, a fun twist on a classic black and white checkerboard, breathes new life into this house!

I Spy DIY’s Loft House Blue Tiled Bathroom

For her Loft House downstairs bathroom, Jenni Yolo took a risk with bold, dark colors, and we definitely think it’s paid off! The Marrakesh Blue and Off White handmade-look tiles add an artisanal charm to this room. The checkerboard pattern in the shower and the Cross Black and Snow White custom patterned tile on the floor work well together, each providing some respite in what could otherwise be a heavy, dark-colored room. Contrasted with the harsh whites of the before picture, this renovation does an amazing job of creating a room that is at once peaceful and bold.

Craven Haven’s Utility Room

This utility room designed by Mackenzie of Craven Haven is more than just utilitarian. The Trecento Calacatta Marbello luxury vinyl tile provides good movement with its bold grey veining that mimics natural stone. We love how the off-white base of the tile matches the color on the upper wall, allowing for the deep plumb cabinetry and wainscoting to stand out.
