Marble-look tile combines the elegance of marble with the durability and easy maintenance of porcelain. This traditional-style laundry room pairs stylish black-and-white Marble Star floor tile with taupe cabinets for a space that feels both elevated and relaxed.

The latest trend in interior design is to embrace what makes you happy. Whether it be bold colors, or charming patterns this design aesthetic is about creating spaces that spark joy as soon as you enter. Keep scrolling for design inspo and tips on how to incorporate tile into your dopamine decor style.

Create a Checkerboard

As classy as it is cheery, a checkerboard pattern will add some fun and whimsy to your space. And this versatile pattern needn’t be relegated to black-and-white floors. Any square-shaped tile can make a checkerboard, so you can mix colors and patterns to create a winning design. You can even stay neutral like Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges did for this grey and white checkerboard backsplash. We love how the handmade look tile adds texture to this kitchen wall, and how she used color to create a dopamine-inducing tableau.

Pick Two to Three Bold Colors

A lot of colors can easily become overwhelming. To keep your room from becoming too busy, try sticking to two to three analogous colors (colors that are close to each other on the color wheel). That’s what Zig and Co. did in this bright and fun entryway. A lot is happening in this room, but there are only three colors–blue, green and yellow–which helps keep the room looking cohesive.

Use a Colorful Trim

You don’t need to saturate an entire room to showcase your favorite color. A somerset or pencil trim will add a pop of color that can tie into other elements in the room or just provide a point of interest in an otherwise neutral space. This laundry room, designed by At Home With Ashley, uses a single line of pink pencil trim to add color to the marble subway tile design. While Ashley also uses a pink floral wallpaper in this space, a white or neutral colored wall would match the tile just as well.

Pair Black and White With a Bold Color

A black-and-white tile complements virtually any color palette–a great choice if you’re considering dipping your toe into dopamine decor. This vibrant room, designed by Timber Trails, pairs the Firenze Carrara Polished Wheaton with Black marble tile with a hot pink walls. The color saturation is excellent but can be easily altered with a new coat of paint.

Have Fun With Shapes

Shape is another way to bring joy to a space. This Art Deco-inspired bathroom, designed by Bari J. Ackerman, uses tile to create a glamorous backsplash. The tiled arches mimic the rounded shapes of the mirrors and light fixtures, while the individual hexagon tiles add to the vintage allure of this charming room. You can use tile to create shapes, or choose from a uniquely shaped tile for an unexpected look that will brighten your mood.

Embrace a Bold Pattern

A bold pattern is a great way to infuse your space with fun and cheer. If you’re worried about overwhelming the room, use a neutral or solid color on the other surfaces. The Laura Ashley Sunflower Charcoal with Cloud Blue patterned floor tile shown here, pairs well with the Laura Ashley White Beveled wall tile for a space that is bright and fanciful, while still being tasteful. Explore our wide assortment of patterned tile to discover a design that fills you with happiness.

Start With a Neutral Base

Even the most charming, joy-filled room can use a place to rest your eye. A neutral tile, whether on the floor or the wall can provide some respite in a busy room. The Baltimore Beige Wood Look tile floor in this room designed by At Home With Ashley, adds to the charm of the pretty nature-inspired wallpaper, without distracting. Wood-look tile and luxury vinyl tile are perfect for adding realistic charm to your space while allowing for more creativity throughout the room.

Have you been contemplating a bathroom refresh? Could your entryway use a little TLC? Whether you’ve been itching to tackle a complete reno or a weekend DIY, these dramatic room transformations will inspire you to update your space.

I Spy DIY’s Loft Bathroom

Jenni Yolo of I Spy DIY took this loft bathroom from drab to dazzling! By dividing the room and installing a stand-alone shower, she created a spa experience in this loft bathroom. We love how the neutral tones of the Riad Grey tile and the Royal White Polished Hex create a calming, peaceful mood and make the bright red accessories pop. For more stunning bathroom ideas, check out 16 Luxurious Bathroom Designs.

Craven Haven’s Boys’ Bathroom

For this Jack and Jill style bathroom accessible to both her boys’ rooms, Mackenzie from Craven Haven wanted a look that was at once classic and fun, and we think she nailed it! This bathroom redo captures the charm of boyhood with its simple color scheme and geometric lines, but remove the red step stools and you have a room perfect for teenagers. The Cali Black and White floor tile has a fun, but orderly design, while the Verano Anthracite and White handmade-look subway tile feature a slightly wavy texture and a glossy finish to reflect the light, making the room appear brighter. The black and white tiles mean this room can be easily updated as her kids evolve their style.

Entryway by Revival 4106

As evident by the before photos, this 1915 house required a complete remodel when it was purchased by the couple behind Revival 4106. They used the Cloth Black and White tile for the entryway and back staircase and we love how it complements the black metal light fixture and the muted green of the entryway. This patterned tile, a fun twist on a classic black and white checkerboard, breathes new life into this house!

I Spy DIY’s Loft House Blue Tiled Bathroom

For her Loft House downstairs bathroom, Jenni Yolo took a risk with bold, dark colors, and we definitely think it’s paid off! The Marrakesh Blue and Off White handmade-look tiles add an artisanal charm to this room. The checkerboard pattern in the shower and the Cross Black and Snow White custom patterned tile on the floor work well together, each providing some respite in what could otherwise be a heavy, dark-colored room. Contrasted with the harsh whites of the before picture, this renovation does an amazing job of creating a room that is at once peaceful and bold.

Craven Haven’s Utility Room

This utility room designed by Mackenzie of Craven Haven is more than just utilitarian. The Trecento Calacatta Marbello luxury vinyl tile provides good movement with its bold grey veining that mimics natural stone. We love how the off-white base of the tile matches the color on the upper wall, allowing for the deep plumb cabinetry and wainscoting to stand out. Luxury vinyl flooring is easy to install and maintain, making it the perfect choice for a DIY project in a high-traffic area.

Haneen’s Haven Bathroom

Haneen from Haneen’s Haven turned this bathroom from blah to brilliant! Using her artistic sensibilities, she created a room that perfectly blends classic and modern details. The Truewood Beige Wood Look tile adds a warm, organic element to this room. For the shower, she went with a simple black and white color scheme. The Saltus patterned tile creates an unexpected artistic moment in these beautiful shower niches.

Fireplace by Kendall Design Build

The Noir Honed Chevron mosaic tile creates a boldly-stylish moment in this chic family room. The black tile paired with the dark cabinetry is a sophisticated redo in this family space and allows for color to come through elsewhere in the room, like the bright gold couch and wooden coffee table. We recently got to sit down with two of our favorite designer friends, Morgan Molitor of Construction2Style and Stephanie Goldfarb of The Divine Living Space. They answered their most frequently asked tile and design questions from homeowners and fellow designers. From their favorite tiles to whether you should make a statement or keep it timeless, we got the scoop!

Q&A

Q: Do you have an exact plan for each design or do you let things fall into place?

Morgan: We have a process that we always follow that creates the plan. And we always have a design plan before we move into any construction and/or give any bids. Once we get to know our clients, their lifestyle, needs, wants, things that are important to them… this becomes the base for what creates our design plan. Once we know that, it’s simple for the elements to come together into place.

Stephanie: A plan.. ALWAYS a plan! If you don’t have a plan you will waste money on selections that don’t go together and don’t feel cohesive.

Q: What backsplash would you recommend for a HUGE wall above our range with no uppers?

Morgan: I love statement walls and am drawn to patterns and colors. Recently actually, I just did a statement wall for a project using the Skyline with Gold Stone Mosaic.

Featured: Outline 1 White Gold and Outline 2 White Gold. Design: Construction2Style. Photo: Chelsie Lopez Production.

Stephanie: There are different ways to approach it. If you want a classic look I would go with longer subway (4″ x 12″ or 4″ x 16″). There are a lot of options and colors in the Imperial collection. I would pair this tile with some chunky open shelves for a beautiful, timeless look.

Check out our guide to subway tile here.

Q: Thoughts on painting interior doors black when you have grey walls and white trim?

Morgan: Love that look and that’s actually exactly what we have in our home! Black interior doors with black casing and white door trim, white baseboards and black window trim all complimented with gray walls. Black window trim was a non-negotiable for my husband Jamie. And gray walls for me. However, we both knew we didn’t want black base trim and we both were on the same page for interior black doors. We loved how the black window trim and interior doors tied the spaces together, but were able to brighten things up with the white base trim and light gray walls.

Design: Construction2Style.

Stephanie: We did black stained oak doors in our last home and they were gorgeous. Go for it!

Q: What are your favorite bathroom tiles right now?

Morgan: Too many to say just one! That’s what I’m loving about the time we’re living in right now. Brands, manufacturers, designers and homeowners are all wanting and willing to mix styles, patterns, and textures and incorporate different styles and elements into their home. When it comes to a bathroom, I love a good black hexagon tile, big or small, and think that will forever be in style and that subway [tile] will forever be timeless.

Stephanie: The Laura Ashley Charcoal is one of my FAVORITE choices for a laundry room, The 10” black hex for a bathroom paired with a wood vanity, the Bulevar Ceramic for a kitchen backsplash, and a 2” Carrara honed marble tile for a master bathroom floor are my current “go to’s.”

Featured: Laura Ashley Mr. Jones Charcoal. Design: The Divine Living Space.

Q: Best tile for a small bathroom floor?

Morgan: Large or small black hex is what we are drawn time and time again. Subtle and clean, yet makes a statement.

Featured: Black Hex Porcelain. Design: Construction2Style

Stephanie: I always recommend using a larger tile for a smaller bathroom. I know it’s counterintuitive, but larger tiles means less grout lines so it looks less busy. I adore the Versatile Light Gray Matte for a classic look.

Q: How do you decide which pieces to splurge vs. save on?

Morgan: It really depends on your story, your lifestyle. What space is most important to you? Where do you spend the most time within? What do you use the most? Once you’ve dialed in on how you use your home then I’d recommend splurging on those elements. If you love and cook a lot, I’d recommend splurging on your appliances. If you work from your island (like me), have a creative job, and need to continuously be inspired by your surroundings to get your creative juices flowing, a statement yet timeless backsplash is something you might want to invest in. Maybe retreating away to a little oasis and within your home every night is a must to unwind, then I’d recommend investing in your bathroom to create that spa-like feel.

Stephanie: I tell my clients to find unique pieces for rooms you spend the most time in and then splurge on some pieces that you LOVE for those rooms. Sometimes it’s a rug, other times a light fixture, or maybe it’s a killer backsplash that will really make a statement.

Q: Make a statement or keep it timeless?

Morgan: Both! I’m all about making a statement, however, I think you can make that timeless as well. Regardless of whether or not to make a statement or to keep it timeless in your home make sure you DO YOU. For us within our home… family, heritage, and pieces that tell a story are all important aspects to me. Both of which can make a statement and remain timeless. When it comes to colors, tiles and styles, I don’t think anything will forever remain timeless. It all evolves and comes back around in one shade, shape, form or another.

Featured: Cube Gold Ceramic. Design: Construction2Style. Photo: Chelsie Lopez Production.

Stephanie: I’m all about the statement in my home, but I always say that as long as you stay true to yourself, it will always be in style.

Q: Grey hex tile… white or black grout?

Morgan: Depends on how dark or light it is. If it’s darker gray I’d say white grout. I love a good contrast. If you were to ask Jamie, the contractor and installer, he always says to match it. Remember, imperfections easily show when the tile pops.

Stephanie: White for sure. I think that’s clean and classic.

Featured: Black Hex Porcelain. Design: The Divine Living Space.

Q: Are large format-tile bathroom walls and floors the new classic or just a trend?

Morgan: I don’t think they are a new classic; I think they’ve been around but you’re just seeing more and more homeowners jump on the bandwagon, and I think it will forever be on trend.

Here, we did a large oversized black tile to give it the illusion of a black slab for half the cost. Paired it with light and bright oversized floor tile to keep it clean, simple and timeless.

Featured: Marmi Classico Porcelain, Hex Matte Black and Imperial Bianco Gloss. Design: Construction2Style. Photo: Chelsie Lopez Production.

Stephanie: If they are neutral in color, I don’t think they will ever go out of style. The larger tiles that are specific colors may date themselves ten years down the road.

Q: How do you find your style?

Morgan: We found our design style when we stopped caring about what anyone else thought. Which is exactly how we’ve been remodeling our current house. I usually say my style is Eclectic Bohemian and Jamie says his design style is Craftsman. I like to make sure every single piece that comes into our home has a meaning, purpose or a story to tell, and Jamie likes to put his carpentry skills to the test. And best of all, it’s always evolving. Our style might be totally different come this time next year. And all of those elements are reflections you see within our home. If you looked at our last two homes, they’re nothing like what we’re living in now.

‘Create a space you love & your life will launch off of that.’ Everyday we get to wake up in a home, our home, that inspires, gives us energy, sends daily motivational & sentimental reminders, pushes and breathes life into us. – Morgan

Stephanie: Ha! Great question. I still don’t know what my “style” is, but I know what I love!

Q: What is a tile you are drawn to and would love to use but haven’t had the opportunity to yet?

Morgan: I have loved the Annie Selke collection, and all the pink tiles, since I laid my eyes on them. And I’ve only gotten one client to add a subtle touch of pink tile in their twin girl jack and jill bath. I would love to have the opportunity to design out a bathroom space with the Annie Selke 3 x 12 subway in a stacked vertical layout within a shower. 2021, goals!

Read more about pink design trends here.

Stephanie: You guys have a floral tile that I have been DYING to use! Flowers are my signature; they are part of my branding and I will never tire of them. Now I just need to find a client who loves florals as much as I do.

That’s it. That’s the post. Feast your eyes on 16 of the prettiest tiled laundry rooms that just might make the dreaded task a little easier.

Even with dark cabinets and floors, the natural light and a whimsical wallpaper brighten the mood in this room.

If you’re all about a light-and-airy color scheme, look no further! Charming wood accents bring a soft, earthy feel to the space.

Who wouldn’t want to look at a colorful, pretty floral pattern while sorting darks and lights? (If floral tile is more your style, check out our post on the topic!)

We’re sensing a floral theme. And it makes perfect sense. What better way to add a sense of openness and light than channeling the bounties of the outdoors?

A rainbow of colors, florals and bright, crips white—this laundry room checks all the boxes. Check out more transformations like this one from the spring 2019 One Room Challenge™ .

This more monochromatic color scheme still manages to brim with life and joy due to greenery and a lively mosaic. If you like how these trim pieces flatter the mosaic, learn more about layering on our blog post.

Bold patterns, ample storage and smart design. It’s fair to say we’re experiencing laundry room envy.

A different twist on laundry room design, this space uses rich earth tones and molded cabinetry to define a traditional space.

A transitional laundry room is perfect for incorporating contemporary touches with more traditional elements.

Patterned and encaustic tiles add modern farmhouse flair to room.

This space proves once again that black and white are always a classic color combo.

A softly patterned floor is the perfect complement to bold cabinets and fixtures.

Nestled in the hills of the Carolinas stands Cristin Cooper‘s rustic, refined farmhouse. With Cristin’s eye for design and the help of her husband and general contractor, Zach Cooper, this unstoppable team built their dream home from the ground up. Join us as the Coopers welcome us into their mountain hideaway!

“While we might be great at communicating, we are not always great at agreeing on architecture and decor,” Cristin said. “Zach is from the mountains and loves modern design and rustic elements. I’m from a small town in South Carolina and love all things southern, traditional and cozy.”

Kitchen

As we look through the rest of their mountain home, we think it’s safe to say they did an amazing job at deciding every design detail.

How gorgeous is the Meram Blanc Carrara Marble backsplash? The stone’s white undertones and light-grey veining beautifully unite with the white cabinetry and reclaimed wood accents.

Laura Ashley Laundry Room

The combination of black cabinetry and light-toned tiles creates a stunning contrast in Cristin’s laundry room.

This backsplash is so charming, we just had to include a close-up view! Patterned backsplashes are a great way to add a personalized statement in your home.

Porch Palace

Disclosure: If you get porch envy easily, then you might want to skip this section. From stunning views to charming decor, this space has it all!

“I thought it would be fun to embrace the bohemian trend,” Cristin said. “I decided to mix several patterns of textiles to pair with our simplistic furniture and keep everything neutral and inviting.”

See all of Cristin’s modern-neutral porch decor here.

Mudroom

Before Cristin visited The Tile Shop, she wanted a small, dark slate-looking floor tile for the mudroom. But to her surprise, the in-store inspiration helped Cristin choose a tile that best fit the smaller space.

“The larger sized Nain Negro really helps open up this narrow space. The tile has the look and feel of slate, but it’s actually a durable porcelain tile,” Cristin added.

“The in-store tiled displays really helps you gauge different sizes and colors and how it will look in your space,” said Cristin.

Master Bathroom

“The Tile Shop helped me tremendously with this space as we had to decide what patterns and sizes would best complement each other and how much tile we would need for the shower and floor,” Cristin said. “I also learned all about niches in the shower wall, polished edging, Dural systems and all finishing pieces when designing a bath.”

Featured: Hampton Carrara Polished floor tile and Hampton Carrara Polished wall tile

Welcome to Hampton Carrara heaven! From herringbone patterned floors to offset pattern shower walls, this master bath shines with elegance.

Guest Bath

“Our guest room is downstairs in what I lovingly refer to as man land—this is where all of Zach’s favorite rooms are,” Cristin explained. “We wanted the bathroom to be dark, moody and rustic.”

Children’s Bath

While the other bathrooms in the house showcase lavish marble appeal, Cristin wanted a clean, simple and affordable tile design for this last space. Luckily, she didn’t have to sacrifice her style and was able to achieve her goal with the stone-look tile flooring. Calacatta Bianco unites the durability of porcelain with the stunning look of marble.

We’re back with another season of the One Room Challenge™ and we can’t wait to share the reveals! From distinct floor designs to glamorous kitchen backsplashes, we were blown away by each of the spectacular spaces that were shared. Here’s part one of our ORC reveal because we couldn’t fit all nine amazing spaces into only one post.

PLACE OF MY TASTE

We’re starting out with one of our most favorite bathrooms ever! Aniko of Place of My Taste turned her “work in progress” bathroom into a resort-style dream master.

This is how Aniko and and her husband designed their bathroom 10 years ago.
They slowly remodeled the bathroom over the years, but they never achieved their dream design.

“The goal for me was to marry two of my favorite styles: modern and vintage,” Aniko said. “The textures and combination of materials made my dreams a reality.”

This luxurious, noir shower design is like a room right out of Architectural Digest! Both the Evoque Carbon wall tiles and Evoque Grigio floor tiles are made of porcelain. The durable material and industrial look makes them a perfect choice for this master bath.

ERIKA WARD INTERIORS

We can’t keep our eyes off of this next ORC space. Erika Ward transformed the warm woods and colors to a bright white and airy blue kitchen dream!

The before space

“Like a rare treasure, I discovered this glass mosaic tile with an iridescent quality much like the inside of a shell,” Erika said. “Installing the tile to the ceiling makes a grandiose statement about my love of the sea and nature-inspired design elements.

The metallic tiles remind us of a mermaid’s tail—don’t you agree?!

Even Erika’s fireplace got a facelift, and we think the design she chose is anything but dreary! When described, Erika says “the new tile marble mosaic surround and hearth reign supreme, classic and cool.”

VERONICA SOLOMON

You’ll have to do a double take after seeing this extraordinary before and after by Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora Interiors. Each pattern unites to create one of the most luxurious laundry rooms we have ever seen.

What’s the definition of glamorous, you ask? This laundry room!

“The art-deco-inspired Streamline Stone Mosaic tile was the perfect way for me to bring in my signature pattern and style mix. I love the pattern with the wallpaper,” Veronica said. “Even though it is not recommended for floors, and only for wall installation, I knew that the laundry room would not be a high-traffic area, so I went for it as the floor tile.”

“You know us creatives. We are going to push the limits just a bit for just the right touch,” Veronica added. “I just love the gold banding that beautifully picks up the gold in the wallpaper.”

SHAVONDA GARDNER & CARMEON HAMILTON

What’s better than one talented designer? Two designers, of course! Shavonda Gardner partnered with one of her best friends, Carmeon Hamilton, to transform Carmeon’s home.

The before space

Have you ever seen a more glorious green bathroom?! The floor-to-ceiling Color Market Army installation on the shower and vanity walls is beautiful and moody!

To balance out the four dark green walls, Carmeon painted the ceiling white and incorporated white stone for the floors.

Transitioning to the master bedroom, Carmeon and Shavonda repeated the deep green color to create a sense of unity. Both the accent wall and ceiling were painted with Behr Marquee Interior Matte North Woods.

Design by Shavonda Gardner and Carmeon Hamilton. Photo by KP Fusion.

From the 3-D accent wall to the countless fabric patterns, Carmeon’s decor choices make this bedroom come to life!

“The foundation of the room and very first thing I picked out for the space was the Deva Linen Platform Bed in Linen Graffito, Carmeon said. “This bed is the literal manifestation of my dreams! The Graffito pattern on the clean lines of the bed are an ideal combination and the clean metal legs finish it perfectly.”
