Turning a lackluster interior into the space of your dreams is just a few design updates away. Explore these breathtaking room transformations for all the inspiration you need to elevate your home with a little TLC. From a pattern-forward maximalist living room to a chic vintage bathroom with pops of pastel pink, there’s fresh eye candy for every style and taste.

1. Brooke Pavel’s Bright Boho Bathroom

During the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge, Iowa-based DIYer Brooke Pavel transformed her home’s unfinished primary bathroom into a cozy, light-filled haven. Featuring the Picket Florencia Super Bianco, Calacata Evora and Royal White Polished Hex Marble tiles alongside natural wood accents and gold hardware, this space is a boho-inspired dream!

2. I SPY DIY’s Bungalow Bathroom

A broken floor tile was the impetus for this bathroom glow-up, designed by Jenni Yolo of I SPY DIY. Working on a budget, she chose the Kasbah Star and Cross Terracotta for their handmade look and Moroccan-inspired design. Though these tiles have the appearance of clay, they are actually porcelain–a durable choice for this rental unit. For the walls, Jenni chose the Villa Warm Grey and White tiles arranged in a custom plaid pattern layout. The warm colors used throughout make this space feel calm and relaxing.

3. Yellow Brick Home Townhouse Kitchen

When Kim and Scott of Yellow Brick Home set out to update their parents’ kitchen, they took note of the pain points: backsplash tile that didn’t fit their style, a clunky appliance garage that ate up counter space, and a counter support that blocked access to seating. The remodeled kitchen increases the flow and cohesion of the space, thanks in large part to the Livingstone Bianco tile backsplash. The large-format tile requires fewer grout joints, giving it the luxurious appearance of a large slab of marble. While the counter support proved integral to the space, they were able to better incorporate it by continuing the tile around the beam.

4. Malcom Simmons’ Lavish & Elegant Bathroom

Designer Malcolm Simmons embraced timeless style and luxury during the bathroom reno in his colonial-style condo. Walls tiled with the light-reflecting Imperial Bianco Gloss subway help the room feel brighter and more open, while the elegant Hampton Carrara Niles marble flooring adds an especially lavish touch. Malcolm’s use of multiple trim pieces, including the Noir Honed Hixton, Hampton Carrara Cardine, Imperial Bianco Gloss Square Pencil and Hampton Carrara Polished Skirting, ties the space together beautifully with a custom, polished look.

5. I SPY DIY’s Boho Farmhouse Kitchen

Jenni Yolo decided to go bold with her duplex kitchen refresh and we think her brashness paid off! Though there is a lot to love about the before images, Jenni wanted a backsplash tile that better complemented the Indonesian-inspired design of the Annie Selke Ikat Black floor tile. Deciding to highlight the brown of the pattern, she chose the Aurea Bronze handmade-look subway tile. The alternating vertical and horizontal stacks add interest to the backsplash the layout is reflected in the arrangement of the planks and beams on the wood ceiling.

6. Haneen’s Haven’s Charming Traditional Bathroom

DIYer Haneen Matt of Haneen’s Haven gave new life to her dated primary bathroom with a delightful blend of rustic and traditional styles. Her use of our wood-look Truewood Beige porcelain tile on the floor creates an effortlessly warm and cozy feel, while the elegant marble shower featuring the Bianco Puro honed subway tile and Hampton Hermosa mosaic elevates the overall design with an opulent look and feel. A hidden highlight? The whimsical wallpaper-look Saltus tile showcased in the shower niches!

7. Blue Orchid Living’s Lovely Laundry Room

Mehr Niazi of @blueorchidliving used a little reno magic to transform this “blah” laundry room into a beautiful space. Pulling colors from the gorgeous floral wallpaper, Mehr created a custom penny round tile design. The White, Pale Taupe and Sky Blue tiles give this space a unique, almost regal appeal. The effect is a room luxurious enough to make you love laundry day.

8. Yellow Brick Home’s Vintage Chic Bathroom

Husband and wife design duo, Scott and Kim Vargo of Yellow Brick Home, took on the challenge of giving their 130-year-old Chicago flat a much-needed bathroom refresh while keeping its vintage charm intact. Wanting to keep the bathroom’s original pastel pink bathtub and sink as the stars of the space, they opted for a simple black-and-white color palette. The Imperial Bianco Gloss subway tile provides a crisp white backdrop, while the Black Marquina Marble Somerset and Black Marquina Marble Skirting add a hint of contrast. The Hampton Niles marble flooring features a sophisticated basketweave pattern that offers the perfect amount of visual interest without stealing the show.

9. Dressing Rooms Interiors’ Glam Black & White Kitchen

Ariene Bethea of Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio created a kitchen that perfectly embodies her signature “soulful maximalism” style during the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge. Her choice of the crisp Herringbone Gloss White mosaic for the backsplash pairs beautifully with deep black cabinetry for intense, eye-catching contrast. Finished with bold pops of color and luxe gold accents throughout, this space takes glam to the next level.

10. Jeweled Interiors’ Maximalist Living Room

To turn her client’s uninspired living room into an elegantly eclectic dream space, interior designer Jewel Marlowe of Jeweled Interiors embraced a bold mix of colors, patterns, and eras. Along with bright blue patterned wallpaper and funky statement-making furniture, one of the living room’s most notable upgrades was the sleek black fireplace. Jewel knew she wanted to update the original stone-stacked fireplace with something more modern and chic. Using our large-format Noir Honed Travertine to achieve the look of a dramatic and luxurious marble slab at a lower cost, the new fireplace makes for a grand focal point that grounds the color-forward space.

11. Pinch Plate Party’s Moody Artisanal Kitchen

Featuring a beautiful artisanal backsplash made of our handmade-look Riad White tile, Pinch Plate Party‘s Lauren Comer created the moody kitchen of her dreams. Wavy, uneven ripples of surface texture and varying shades of rich, creamy white give the Riad tile a crafted-by-hand appearance that instantly makes any surface appear softer. Complete with rich olive green cabinetry, warm brown tones from the Arbour Midlands Nutmeg Oak luxury vinyl flooring and whimsical floral wallpaper, this kitchen is a relaxing haven.

12. Hunted Interior’s Refined Guest Bathroom

Hunted Interior‘s Kristin Jackson transformed her bland guest bathroom into a timeless and refined space during the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge. On the walls, Kristin incorporated the Glass Rosewater subway tile for its inviting greige hue that ties in beautifully with the soft veins of silvery grey and linen beige in the Royal White Polished Marble Hexagon Mosaic flooring. Styled with a few of Kristin’s favorite antique home decor pieces, this bathroom is the definition of tasteful design.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting a few of the incredible women in the home design and build industry who continue to inspire us with their hard work, ambition, and undeniable talent. We had the amazing opportunity to talk with six trailblazing women (learn more about them below!) who shared about their personal experiences, moments of empowerment, and much more. It was such an honor to hear their insights into what it means to be a woman in the field today. Keep scrolling to see what they had to say!

Kim Vargo

Kim Vargo is one-half of the team behind the Chicago-based blog Yellow Brick Home. On any given day, you’ll find her and her husband, Scott, course-correcting their way through their 130-year-old house. They’ve taken down walls, turned a kitchen into a bedroom, and love any reason to wear their tool belts and get creative.

Morgan Molitor

Morgan is a co-founder and one-half of the lifestyle brand construction2style, alongside her husband, Jamie. For 10 years, they’ve been tearing houses apart and creating new dream spaces–not only for their clients but for themselves. Morgan oversees all of construction2style‘s content creation, manages brand partnerships, is the writing guru, and lead designer. She also heads up their online education courses and workshops. She’s a forward thinker, risk-taker, and nothing makes her happier than when she gets to play a small part in making people’s dreams and lives thrive.

Rashida Banks

Rashida Banks is an interior designer and home decor content creator based in Washington, DC. She prides herself on creating high-end, functional designs for her clients, all the while teaching her audience how to be designers of their own homes.

Kelli Fontana Vogelgesang

Photography by Michelle Tricca.

Designer Kelli Fontana Vogelgesang is known for her timelessly bold, inviting interiors and custom-built luxury homes. Starting her interior design career in Florida in 2003, she became a founder and creative director of West Bay Homes based in Minneapolis in 2014. In 2023, Kelli launched her exclusive Tile Shop collection, the Kelli Fontana collection features her signature bold, whimsical design. Kelli believes that a home is an extension and expression of the individuals who inhabit it. Always nurturing and functional: the beauty of her projects is brought forth through her sense of what her clients consider beautiful.

Schannon Yodice

Schannon Yodice is an accountant-turned-tile setter, known online as That Tile Chick. After working as an accountant for nearly a decade, Schannon realized she was unhappy and unfulfilled in her career. In 2020, she left her 9-5 accounting job and started working full-time setting tile. Since then, she’s had incredible career growth and is happier than ever in her hands-on role.

Carmeon Hamilton

Carmeon Hamilton is a Memphis-based interior designer and lifestyle blogger behind the brand Nubi Interiors, winner of HGTV’s Design Star: Next Gen and star of HGTV’s Reno My Rental. Her work, story, and content around design, branding, and elevating the everyday are featured and referenced in Architectural Digest, Southern Living, Essence, Domino and more. Carmeon utilizes her design education and vast experience to discover the beauty in all things and help others find beauty in what surrounds them every day.

Why do you think it’s important for more women to consider working in the home design and build industry?

Rashida: Diversity is so key to keeping the industry fresh and innovative. Women have a much different life experience and see things from a different lens. Therefore, inventions and best practices can be refined and discovered simply because of varying perspectives. Women of different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who desire to be a part of this industry should feel welcomed because their perspective can answer issues that have never been solved, or invent new and efficient ways of doing things.

Kim: When we see ourselves reflected in any industry, it’s the boost that young women need to know that they can do this, too! As an Asian American, I’m especially inspired when I see an Asian woman putting in the work and making magic in her/their home. In a male-dominated society, it’s important for us to lean on each other in every sense of the word, from inspiration gathering to comfort to encouragement and design execution.

Morgan: There is a huge gap in the diversity within the home industry. Bringing more women into this industry is one of many ways we can help bridge that gap. I also believe there’s been a handful of stigmas around the construction industry, one of which is its reputation being that it is male-dominated – a man’s world. But we’re making strides! And as we all know, there is a huge labor shortage and looking at the construction industry it’s typically conveyed as blue-collar, boots to the ground, getting your hands dirty, and not necessarily for someone with an educational background. Which is not the case at all.

Schannon: I love proving myself to myself. Every project is a new challenge and overcoming that challenge reminds me of what I am capable of. I think if a woman is interested in this line of work, they should expect to be challenged mentally and physically but I believe everyone is capable of it.

What advice do you have for women joining the industry?

Kelli: Do! Learn and expand your practice. The more you do the more hours you spend, the more experience you gain. Don’t let anyone talk you out of pursuing your passions and your goals, and pursue them with fierce determination.

Schannon: Many people in this industry will try to sway you towards thinking inside the box they think you fit in. Never listen.

Rashida: Find your expertise and really go all in. There are so many sectors of the industry, and while it’s great to be known overall, I do think it’s important to find your “genius”. Whether that be building furniture, painting, construction, upholstery, a certain design style, whatever it may be, operate in your genius and make it loud enough so that everyone watching knows!

Carmeon: I want more women to study ALL aspects of this industry and consider infiltrating spaces where we are rarely seen: architecture, furniture and product design, manufacturing, production and set design, general contracting and building trades, etc. You are needed. Your voice is needed. Your talents are needed in those spaces.

Can you recall a specific experience in your career when you felt particularly empowered as a female?

Morgan: When one of our employees left our company, and after informing our current clients about this transition, one of our clients sent me an email saying how proud I should be for the woman that I just created. And how cool it was to see from an outside lens how we were empowering and uplifting her to go out on her own. To be honest, I had never looked at it that way and it was so cool to be reminded of what we have worked so hard on creating at construction2style. It goes far beyond designing and remodeling homeowners’ homes.

Kim: Nothing fills me with more pride than when my 4-year-old daughter watches what I do and asks to help with a DIY project.

Rashida: There was a moment I felt particularly empowered. It was after spraying my kitchen cabinets. That task was more daunting than some of the laborious build projects because of how much cabinet paint finish matters. And I really wanted a factory smooth finish. When I was done, contractors saw it and wanted to hire me because of the finished product! My answer was no, but it definitely felt good!

Kelli: When I realized I was bringing hundreds of individuals with me on my creative journey. That’s when I knew that I had stepped into a place in my career that took years of experience hustle and failures to come to. It was a moment that I realized that I had done it. Then I set my sights on bigger goals.

What is one thing you wish more people knew about women in this industry?

Kelli: Woman balance so much. Working, career-minded women have to make decisions that are difficult ones. In the end, I feel like my children see me trying and being excited and truly passionate about my work. My daughter has told me that she is proud of me. Her acknowledgment truly means the world to me. I want to show my daughter that she can have a family and a career that brings her much happiness. I tell her all the time that her opportunities are limitless. She knows that what she sees for herself she will become. We are all becoming all of the time. That is a beautiful thing about life. That is a beautiful thing about a creative career.

Kim: Please don’t look at us and think, how do you create work/life balance? We’re not ‘doing it all,’ rather, we’re prioritizing our passion. Some days that might look like cleaning the house and finally putting that recipe to good use, and other days it might look like sawdust and nail guns. Like everyone, we have to put in the hard work.

Morgan: Women are good at multitasking, and that is no myth. Which is a trait that is so desirable and needed in the design and construction industry. Beyond the demands of home, work/life balance – women work so hard behind the scenes with clients, internal and external teams, subs, co-workers, and more. Beyond work, they are good at managing expectations, emotions, processes, organizations and growth. We know how to get things done effectively and efficiently, and don’t tolerate much because there is no time for it. We’re good at switching activities quickly and meeting the demands of deadlines.

Carmeon: Women make up over 60% of the working designers in the industry, but very few of us, less than 30%, are in positions of power and leadership. We still have work to do.

Who are some other women in this industry that inspire you?

Schannon: A few women in this field who inspire me are Cecilia Leger – a tile setter in Nebraska, Anna of The Plumbing Princess, and Morgan Venetos of The Home Collective, a design/build real estate firm.

Morgan: Katie from @jkath_designbuild, Mercedes from @mercedesaustinart, Stephanie from @thedivinelivingspace, Amanda from @henriinterors, Danielle from @clarkandaldine, and so many more. Beyond the incredible work they do and the businesses that they have created and grind at daily, I know how hard each of them work to change this industry and take part in other acts of service to help change the world. They are confident, determined, and are there for other like-minded entrepreneurs, such as myself, to lift us back up off the ground when we continuously fall short. They are women who show up and will drop anything to help others overcome any obstacle they might face.

Kim: My peers in the influencer world are the ones that inspire me the most. To see that anyone can pull up their bootstraps, so to speak, and create a home they love is awe-inducing. While I love to examine the pages of an Architectural Digest magazine, I connect most to those on a similar level to me — i.e., moms with an idea and a tool bag.

Kelli: There are truly so many women I look up to and admire. A few of them include: @kellywearstler – a waitress and graphic designer, Kelly immersed herself in the world of interior design. She took on small jobs at first… word grew! Kelly is a fearless creature with so much to give. Always creating in limitless modalities is very inspiring to me.  @windsorsmithhome started as an antique dealer with a distinct eye for purposeful combinations of furniture, layout and architectural impact. Smith’s homes truly interact with the people that inhabit them. Her personal home caught the attention of Gwyneth Paltrow and the rest is history. @elainwelteroth is a journalist with a vision and a tenacity to go for her goals and her dreams. Now an activist, a brand partner, a writer, or a TV host, the list goes on and on, oh, and the editor of Teen Vogue magazine at 27 years old!

Carmeon: Other women in this industry who inspire me include Shavonda Gardner, Nicole White, Erika Ward, Ajia Monét, Nike Onile, Jen Talbot, Leanne Ford, Kelly Wearstler, and Athena Calderone.

Rashida: I’m inspired by Albie of AlbieKnows, Carmeon of Carmeon Hamilton and Nubi Interiors, Shavonda of SGardner Style, Lydia of Drywall Shorty, Ashley of SmashingDIY, Heidi from Heidi Caillier Design, Julia from Chris Loves Julia, Emily of Style by Emily Henderson, Brigette of Romanek Design Studio, Athena of Eyeswoon. I feel like I’m missing so many, but those women–among many others–inspire me daily!

We truly hope you enjoyed learning more about these lovely ladies and each of their unique experiences! We are so inspired by all of the women who enter into the home design and build industry and continue to make it a more inclusive and diverse space.

What better time to refresh your space than the start of a new year? We’re breaking down six major home design trends you can expect to see in 2022, while giving you all the inspiration you need to incorporate them into your next renovation. From bold textures to organic shapes, there’s something for everyone at the forefront of style and design!

Warm Neutrals

One of the most prominent overall themes we’re seeing in 2022 is the embrace of soft, comforting elements–and color is no exception! While bright whites and cool-toned greys are tried-and-true options, there’s been a definite shift towards warmer, richer color palettes recently. Creamy whites, taupes, beiges, and browns are quickly becoming the new go-to hues for the cozy, inviting atmosphere they instantly lend to any space.

Nature-Inspired

With many of us spending increased time at home, it has become more important than ever to bring elements of the outdoors in. Intricate floral patterns like those displayed in our Morris & Co Pure Net tiles give a nod to the charm of the English countryside, while options from our Laura Ashley and Annie Selke collections feature a variety of grounded, earthy tones and beautiful botanicals. Create an oasis-like bathroom with soft blues and muted greys that evoke the calming sense of the ocean, or achieve an invigorating atmosphere with bold greens and leafy prints that speak to the lush essence of a tropical rainforest.

Artisanal Handmade-Look

One of our favorite recent trends that is only growing more popular in 2022, handmade-look tile brings an effortlessly whimsical feel to any design with its unique artisanal style. Beautifully imitating the nuances found in tile that’s authentically crafted by hand, such as uneven surface texture and color variation, this style creates one-of-a-kind dimension and interest while maintaining a softer overall appearance.

Learn more about the special characteristics of handmade-look tile, and see some of our favorite spaces featuring it, here.

Sculptural

If you’re looking for an easy way to create a striking focal point, sculptural tile is your answer! While it’s true that sculptural/3D tile has been around for a number of years, it’s certainly having a moment in 2022 as designers and DIY-ers are embracing texture and utilizing tile as a true artistic element like never before. With styles ranging from bold geometric patterns to gentle flowing waves, you’re sure to find the perfect option to achieve that wow-factor.

We have a more in-depth breakdown of the sculptural tile trend here, where you can also see it used in a range of unique spaces.

Organic Shapes

Continuing the theme of soft and comforting elements is the use of more organic shapes. Whether it’s through tile installations, structural designs, fixtures or decor pieces, you’re sure to see more curved lines, rounded shapes and arched details this year. In contrast to ultra-modern design that offers a sense of order and structure with crisp lines and rigid elements, organic shapes tend to feel approachable and harmonious by representing a more natural state, instantly easing the atmosphere in any room.

Keep an eye on our new arrivals as we have a number of gorgeous tiles coming (very!) soon that fit this trend perfectly.

Custom Patterns

As more and more people are reinventing their style and taking creative risks–which we love to see–the final trend we’re highlighting for 2022 is custom tile patterns. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to the one-of-a-kind designs you can achieve – all you need is a little creativity!

If you’re looking for help getting started, we’ve got an entire blog post dedicated to our favorite custom tile patterns that’ll be sure to spark some inspiration.

That’s a wrap on these six major trends for 2022! We hope you’re feeling inspired and energized to try something new in your next design. If the last few years taught us anything, however, it’s the importance of having a home that brings you joy, comfort, and inspiration. So keep in mind that the ultimate design trend is creating a space that reflects you. Cheers to more beautiful, meaningful spaces in 2022!

Hex Patterns

Quickly growing in popularity, hexagon tiles bring striking dimension to any space with their bold geometric shape. Smaller hex tiles can achieve the same intricate look of penny-rounds with sharper edges, while larger hexes bring a more dominant feel to a design. We can’t get over these especially creative designs that take tile artistry to the next level!

We absolutely adore the handmade-look tile in this farmhouse kitchen. Along with the fun hex flooring, you can also spot a subtle checkerboard patterned backsplash that offers effortless cohesion and visual interest. Find out just what makes handmade-look tile so special, and see more incredible spaces featuring it, here.

The saying “What’s old is new again” doesn’t ring truer than in the home design industry. Now more than ever, designers and homeowners are seeking out ways to bring a sense of character and individuality into their spaces. For the same reason reclaimed wood, antique furnishings and upcycled thrift store finds have seen a resurgence in recent years, so has the popularity of handmade tile. Unlike the classically crisp and clean nature of the medium, tile crafted by hand features delicate imperfections and organic beauty that makes each piece one of a kind.

Thanks to recent advancements in tile technology, it’s now easier than ever to mimic the nuanced look and feel of handmade tile in more durable and maintenance-friendly materials. We’re diving into all things handmade-look tile and showing you some of our favorite spaces featuring it below!

Rich Color Variation

One of the most notable features of handmade and handmade-look tile is its beautiful color variation. While a typical tile tends to display the same consistent, even-colored body throughout, a handmade option will often showcase its layers of richness with a number of varying shades. Our handmade-look Riad Sand tiles are a stunning example of this variation – while each piece of ceramic is from the same batch, their creamy tan tones deviate from tile to tile, creating a slight patchwork effect.

Featuring: Splendours Grey.

Perfectly Imperfect Texture

Due to the natural pooling of glazes during the making of handmade tiles, they feature gentle waves of texture that create an enticing sensorial experience. These same textured grooves can also be seen and felt in handmade-look tiles, designed intentionally to closely mimic authentic handcrafted elements. With this subtle, one-of-a-kind dimension in each tile, walls and floors come alive with beautiful movement.

A Hue Just for You

With a rainbow of color options from soft and subtle to bright and bold, our handmade-look tiles can easily be incorporated into any design style, allowing personality to shine. Warm- and cool-toned whites, greys, and tans create the perfect neutral backdrop for a space, while vibrant colors like rich sage greens, ocean blues, and bold lavenders offer a more striking focal point.

Shape It Up

Bring a whimsical touch to the everyday subway tile with a handmade-look option. While it still offers a classic overall design, the handmade elements bring a soft charm to the typically sleek and uniform style. For a more contemporary style, try our handmade-look options offered in pickets, squares, hexagons and more.

The Final Touch

As with any tile, the finish makes all the difference when it comes to overall appearance. For a more organic look and feel, a matte finish—like that featured in our Color Market tiles—is the perfect option. To get a slightly smoother and shinier style, a gloss finish will reflect light beautifully while highlighting the tile’s unique surface texture, as can be seen in the Splendours collection. Offering a striking touch of glamour is the pearlescent finish displayed in the Mallorca tiles – glistening in the light, its luster is unmatched.

Check out our Guide to Tile Finishes for a deep dive into the different styles offered for each tile type!

Get ready to step inside this breathtaking primary bathroom designed by the lovely husband and wife duo, Chris and Julia Marcum of Chris Loves Julia. The Marcums completed this project in their Idaho home earlier this year before recently moving across the country to North Carolina. Featuring our Silver Mist Honed Limestone collection, this dreamy bathroom is a perfect mix of contemporary and traditional, living up to the home’s modern cottage style.

Explore more of our favorite spaces featuring transitional style, plus tips on how to incorporate it into your own home!

When designing this space, Julia wanted to find a tile that would coordinate well with the bluish grey paint color used in the adjoining primary bedroom and closet. She fell in love with our Silver Mist collection for its beautiful mix of warm- and cool-toned greys.

I love choosing neutrals that lean toward a color, in this case, a warm blue, because it just makes it so much more interesting.

Julia Marcum, Chris Loves Julia

Julia dives into more detail about her decision to mix tiles from the Silver Mist collection on the Chris Loves Julia blog.

Featuring mosaics, trim, and field tiles in a variety of styles, our Silver Mist collection allows for endless customization options. Chris and Julia decided to use the offset Silver Mist Honed Amalfi Mosaic for all of the bathroom’s walls, while opting for the larger-scale 8″ x 20″ Silver Mist Tile on the floor.

Shop our vast assortment of grey tile to find the perfect option for your space.

In order to create smooth transitions between the wall’s painted surface and the wall tile, as well as between the wall and floor tiles, the Silver Mist Honed Barnes and Silver Mist Honed Skirting were incorporated into the space. Trim and accessory pieces such as these are the perfect way to ensure your design feels both custom and complete.

Not sure where to start when it comes to tile trim? We’ve put together a comprehensive guide for you with a breakdown of our different trim and accessory pieces, as well as how to integrate them into your design! If you’re ready to shop, check out our extensive assortment of finishing pieces.

One of our favorite aspects of the bathroom–the shower–features the Silver Mist Honed Amalfi Mosaic as well as the Silver Mist Honed Hex Mosaic for a playful mix of shapes that creates visual interest and added dimension while remaining cohesive.

We used 5 different tiles to create the foundation of a classic space that is all the same stone, but in so many different shapes it feels really tone on tone and creates the coolest texture story when they are all paired together!

-Julia Marcum, Chris Loves Julia

The choice to continue the Silver Mist Honed Amalfi Mosaic from the main area into the shower (even on the ceiling!) helps the overall bathroom design flow from one space to the next without feeling disconnected.

A lover of mixing metals, Julia used black plumbing faucets and lighting fixtures throughout the space while creating warmer accents with brass hardware. Doing so helped her achieve a lovely balance of both masculine and feminine styles.

If you’re yearning for the effortlessly luxurious feel that natural stone brings to a space, shop hundreds of unique styles of limestone, marble, travertine, and more on our website.

Find out even more about this incredible bathroom remodel by visiting Chris Loves Julia’s blog.

That’s a wrap on this modern cottage bathroom! Drooling? Don’t worry, us too.

This actually isn’t the first time we’ve worked with Chris Loves Julia! We partnered with them on the backsplash for their very first kitchen remodel, as well the flooring throughout their last home. We are continuously inspired by their stunning design work and are thrilled to be able to partner with them on spaces such as these. As we mentioned earlier, they recently moved to a new home in North Carolina. One of their first DIY projects? Creating a custom floor pattern using some of our classic penny round tiles – check it out here!

four interior design spaces

Welcome back for Part 2 of our Spring 2021 One Room Challenge™ reveals! In case you missed the first half of the season’s stunning renovations, be sure to catch up here. It’s been so much fun watching each space come to life through the incredible artistry of our featured designers. Prepare to be wowed by these final four transformations!

Gray Space Interior Design

Starting us off is a glamorous primary bedroom and en suite bathroom renovation completed by Rasheeda Gray of Gray Space Interior Designs. The two areas of her home that she felt lacked purposeful design, Rasheeda aimed to turn her bedroom and bathroom into a personal oasis that she and her husband could enjoy away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Before photo of Rasheeda’s bathroom.

Inspired by the rich browns, golds, and burgundies found in a sunset, Rasheeda transformed her bedroom into an elegant haven that fully achieved the moody feel she was going for. By integrating bolder decor pieces like a striking chandelier, she was also able to maintain consistency with the black-and-white color scheme that flows throughout the rest of her home.

Rasheeda’s favorite part of her updated bedroom? A lavish marble-look fireplace that maximizes the space’s cozy atmosphere. Her choice of our large-format Invisible Grey tile creates an extra sleek focal point that draws the eye in with dramatic veining. Plus, the tile’s gold accents tie in perfectly with the warm sunset-inspired color palette.

See more of our favorite tiled fireplace designs on the here. You can also explore our diverse assortment of large-format tile to bring an especially grand feel to any space.

Continuing the Invisible Grey tile into the en suite bathroom, Rasheeda was able to create ultimate cohesion between the two spaces. Unlike the bathroom’s previous appearance, it was important to her that the updated design felt clean, bright, and high-end. Not only does the floor-to-ceiling marble-look tile create an air of sophistication, but it adds a nice amount of movement and dimension to the space.

I went with the Invisible Grey porcelain wall and floor tile because it felt so luxurious and alluring. The sleekness of the grey, silver, and hints of gold complement the light and airy feel, but its marble look also feels very luxurious and spa-like.

Zig & Co.

If you recognize the name Zig & Co., it’s because we previously partnered with Courtney Wafzig, owner of Zig & Co., during the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge™ when she redesigned her primary bathroom. This time around, Courtney wanted to tackle her home’s large sunroom. After years of using it as an ever-changing catch-all space for various projects, she knew this was the perfect opportunity to make better use of the space by turning it into a functional living and dining area.

Known for her signature floral style, Courtney completely transformed this multipurpose room into a dreamy, inspiring space with bright colors, bold patterns, and one-of-a-kind decor.

The biggest project of the renovation? Upgrading the worn floors. Last updated in the 1990s, Courtney was more than ready to freshen up the room with new tiled flooring. Using our Manhattan Mercury wood-look porcelain tile, she created the perfect neutral foundation for the space. With a charming parquet-style pattern, it offers just the right amount of visual interest while still maintaining an overall soft and subtle appearance to balance out the bolder design elements.

Haneen’s Haven

Uninspired by her home’s primary bathroom, Haneen Matt of Haneen’s Haven was ready to give it a much-needed makeover. With tons of underutilized space and a dated appearance that didn’t fit her style, she envisioned a more functional bathroom that featured a beautiful blend of both modern and traditional elements.

Ready to swoon over some breathtaking before-and-afters?

Haneen opted for our Truewood Beige porcelain tile to bring a charming, rustic feel to the bathroom’s floor. The creamy tan hues with woodgrain detailing contrast gorgeously against the space’s darker design features.

I decided to warm things up with the Truewood Beige wood-look tile on the floors. It did just the trick! This room is both classic and modern, simultaneously, and the look of wood on the floors really keeps things cozy.

-Haneen

Learn more about the increasingly popular transitional style and how to incorporate both contemporary and traditional elements into a single space here.

A self-proclaimed lover of marble (us, too!), Haneen chose the Bianco Puro honed marble subway tile for her shower walls. With minimal veining, it offers a clean and modern appearance. To incorporate a bit of traditional style, Haneen used our Hampton Hermosa polished octagon marble mosaic on the shower floor, complete with small hints of black for added dimension. Last, but certainly not least is the whimsical Saltus porcelain tile featured in the shower niches. Keep scrolling to get a closer look!

At Home with Ashley

Another returning featured designer, Ashley Wilson of At Home with Ashley transformed her laundry room during the 2019 One Room Challenge. This season, she decided to do a major kitchen renovation. While she’s made a few temporary updates to the home’s original kitchen, she had bigger plans for the space. Her goal? A light-and-bright design that felt traditional, yet playful.

Keep scrolling to see the different phases of Ashley’s kitchen before turning into the radiant space it is today.

We can hardly believe this is the same space as the original kitchen! From dark and dull to light-filled and bursting with color, Ashley has wowed us yet again with her creative vision.

When it came to flooring, Ashley knew she wanted something that was both beautiful and durable. She decided on the Baltimore Beige porcelain tile for its rustic white oak appearance that coordinates with the existing stair railing.

Ashley opted for the Regent Bianco subway tile as her kitchen backsplash for its classic, simple style. The crisp white color allows the rainbow wallpaper and pastel pink appliances to shine without becoming too overwhelming.

I just adore subway tile because it works with the history of the house and it will reflect light.

All about the bright and cheery hues? Ashley let us in on her top six tricks for designing with color.

To cozy up the dining area, Ashley included a vintage-style fireplace that features our Imperial Bianco gloss hex mosaic. She opted for a white grout color in order to achieve a smooth and calming appearance. We love the way the hexes offer a lovely hint of dimension!

We’re thrilled to reveal the first four of eight total spaces that we sponsored during the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge™! From creating custom tile patterns to utilizing one-of-a-kind layouts, we are beyond inspired by the design expertise these featured designers showcased in just eight short weeks. Prepare to swoon over some spectacular before-and-afters, and make sure to keep an eye out for Part 2 of reveals coming soon!

Bari J Designs

We’re kicking things off with a bathroom transformation that has a major wow factor completed by Bari Ackerman of Bari J Designs. Dubbing it her Deco Dreams Primary Bathroom, Bari turned this everyday bathroom into a true work of art through intricate tile design, playful colors, and a balance of unique shapes.

Before bathroom photo One Room Challenge Bari J. Designs
Before photo of Bari’s primary bathroom.

Can you believe this is the same space?! Complete with tiled arches, a fluted vanity, and Bari’s signature floral decor, this bathroom is a whimsical dream. Featuring our Imperial Ivory Matte Hex and Imperial Pink Gloss Hex, the artistic backsplash takes center stage and displays incredible craftsmanship.

I wanted this room to have somewhat of an art deco feel with the arches…This room is really all about the shapes and color.

-Bari

Knowing she wanted the design to play off of shape, Bari chose the small hexagon tiles for the way they contrast the curves of the arches, mirrors, and lighting fixtures while still reading round overall.

While it would be easy to assume the pink arches are simply painted, it’s clear in the detail shot below just how precisely each of the pink and white hexagons were cut and installed in order to line up perfectly with one another.

To border the lower half of the bathroom walls, Bari chose our classic Imperial Ivory Matte subway tile – with a twist. Using unconventional grout lines–running thicker horizontally and thinner vertically–she was able to achieve added dimension and visual interest. We love the unique style!

Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio

After 14 years of living in her home, Ariene Bethea of Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio decided it was time for a full kitchen refresh, with the goal of creating a space that felt sleek, modern and clean. No surprise – she totally hit the mark!

Before photos of Ariene’s kitchen.

A classic for a reason, Ariene utilized a black and white color palette for her updated kitchen. To create striking contrast against the deep black cabinetry, she chose our crisp Herringbone Gloss White mosaic for her backsplash, turning it diagonally for a more contemporary look.

Learn all about designing with black and white tile on our blog!

It was important to balance the black cabinets with enough white elements, so I selected a herringbone mosaic from The Tile Shop. The clean, modern and simple design feels fresh, yet timeless.

-Ariene

To emphasize the dimension featured in the herringbone pattern, Ariene used a whisper gray gout color that also pulled out the beautiful grey hues in the quartz countertop.

Stunning brass details sprinkled throughout the space provide the perfect amount of warmth and glamour!

Visit Ariene’s website to keep up with all things Dressing Rooms Interiors Studio.

Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges

After leaving the kitchen area in her basement mostly untouched since moving into her house four years ago, Racheal Jackson of Banyan Bridges knew it was finally time for an update. She yearned for a space that felt warm, playful, and cozy – perfect for family and friends to gather in. We were thrilled to sponsor Racheal throughout this challenge and help bring her vision to life!

Before photo of Racheal’s basement kitchen.

Say hello to Racheal’s new basement kitchen! We absolutely adore the creativity displayed in this space, especially when it comes to the checkerboard backsplash.

Interestingly enough, Racheal’s original design called for an all-grey backsplash using our Riad Grey ceramic tile. After reviewing the space, however, she realized it needed more white elements incorporated for balance and brightness. Racheal came back to us with an updated design idea – to create a custom checkerboard layout using both Riad Grey and Riad White, which we were absolutely delighted about!

The Riad tiles feature beautiful texture and color variation from piece to piece, giving them an authentic handmade look. Explore our full selection of handmade-look tile on our website!

To play off of the grey and white tiles, Racheal painted the floor of her dining area with a similar checkerboard pattern in coordinating colors. It’s such a unique design element that really pulls the space together!

I’m so deeply in love with this backsplash. It’s playful and adds so much life to a kitchen that could have felt a little too mature for my taste. This keeps the kitchen fresh and adds new life to the antique appliances and furniture in the space.

Susan Hill Interior Design

Since moving into a brand new home nine years ago, Susan Hill of Susan Hill Interior Design has worked to make it a place that feels like a true reflection of her and her family. When asking her daughters what space they’d prefer she redesigned for this season of One Room Challenge™, they both immediately agreed on the playroom. Once fitting for the girls’ childhood, the dated space was no longer functional for the now-teenagers. Susan knew this was the perfect opportunity to create a tech-friendly gaming room that was warm and relaxing for the entire family to spend time in.

The result? This fabulously fun gaming room, complete with a snack bar, LED lighting, and all the charging stations her kids could ever need for their electronics!

When it came to the room’s color palette, Susan incorporated a variety of monochromatic hues to create a soothing atmosphere, while grounding the space with charcoal grey accents.

Have you ever seen a cuter snack bar?!

One of the biggest items on her kids’ gaming room wishlist, this chic little snack nook is complete with a beverage fridge, floating shelves, and a playful backsplash featuring our Terrazo Bianco Macro porcelain tile.

Displaying a lively blend of black, pastel, and neutral hues, this terrazzo-look tile complements the space’s color scheme while adding just the right amount of movement and dimension.
