]]>As evidenced by this gorgeous space designed by @forgegrove, Zellige tiles are perfect for creating understated elegance in your shower. The uneven surfaces of the Zellige White gloss tile add a tactile element to this space, and the sleek brass fixtures help elevate even more. The authentic materials and minimalistic look of this space give it an air of “quiet luxury.”
The current trend toward mixing warm and cool neutral tones together provides timeless appeal. With its natural variations in coloration, the Zellige Light Grey gloss tile–shown here in this lush bathroom designed by Arias Home–fluctuates between cool and warm grey tones. The effect is a decidedly contemporary look using ancient techniques.
Perfect for a kitchen or bathroom backsplash, petite 2″ x 6″ subway tiles, shown here in the Zellige Dirty Blue gloss, are a new take on a classic design. The smaller format allows for more grout lines as well as more tiles per square foot, resulting in a beautifully undulating surface as the color and surface texture fluctuate from tile to tile. Shop this tile in all four vibrant colorways: Azul, Turquoise, Dirty Blue and Shamrock.
This retro-favorite shape is making a comeback, and the handmade square tile–like the Zellige White gloss used in this chic kitchen designed by Fox Homes–demonstrates how this classic design can be made modern. Though the color scheme is monochromatic, there is a lot of visual texture in this kitchen backsplash. The glossy finish reflects light to highlight the subtle variations in surface texture from one tile to the next, and the wide grout joints accentuate the tiles’ handcrafted edges.
If Zellige tiles aren’t in your budget, or if you want a slightly more uniform appearance, handmade-look tile, like the Riad White tile shown here, are a charming and cost-effective alternative. Mimicking the handcrafted look, these tiles feature slight variations in tone and surface texture and are available in a wide variety of sizes and colors. Shop our extensive assortment of handmade-look tiles to find the perfect match for your space.
A fireplace is a natural focal point; make it a standout with handcrafted Zellige tiles. This fireplace surround, designed by @daryakaras, features a charming checkerboard of Zellige in Alabaster and White gloss. The undulating tones add warmth and movement to this Craftsman living room.
Another popular Zellige tile design is the Chabone Star and Cross tiles (shown here in Charcoal). By pairing Star matte tiles with Cross glossy tiles (or vice versa) you can create a subtle tile design that fluctuates with the play of light across the room. Traditionally used for floors, these tiles look stunning when paired with a subway or square Zellige wall tile (like the Zellige Alabaster gloss tile shown here).
The checkerboard rules aren’t written in black and white. This luxurious shower uses the Kasbah tile in alternating Terracotta Cross and Star Bone for a twist on traditional Moroccan design. The orange and white handmade-look tiles are complemented by the rust veining in the Pisa Oro wall tile, giving this space a cohesive and visually rich design. A similar look can be achieved using the Zellige Chabone Cross Charcoal and Star Bone tiles.

]]>As a designer, I’m always noticing products that are missing from the market. That’s been my success with my other lines; I want to design the items–oversized patterns on wallpaper and pillows, and neutral area rugs–that I’m not finding as I shop. So, when The Tile Shop came to me and said ‘we’d love to do a collaboration,’ it was a natural choice because tile is essentially a wallpaper that can be used where wallpaper isn’t ideal, like wet spaces. I like that versatility–I can bring my designs to spaces where you wouldn’t traditionally find something so bold and graphic.
Both the Zulu and Tangier are derived from other products in my home collections. The Zulu tile is based on a top-selling wallpaper I designed for York Wallcoverings. The Tangier tile originated from a rug that’s been in my line for 10 years. My clientele love this pattern, so I’m excited to offer it in tile form.
The impetus for my designs comes from textiles–prints and patterns I found in India, Indonesia and Africa. I take that inspiration and I create my signature bold, graphic and simple hand-drawn designs.
My personal design style is very monochromatic. I like using a neutral color palette and infusing it with global patterns and textures. I gravitate towards neutrals for the main elements then add color in ways that aren’t so permanent, creating this subtle and soft palette. That’s why Zulu and Tangier really work. They’re giving that neutral color palette with that great pattern, which can be challenging to find on the market.
When I’m working with a client who is unsure about what color to use, I advise them to to look in their closet–the clothes you buy will often reveal the colors you gravitate towards. When designing a space that has three bathrooms–a powder bath and two main baths–I say to the client, ‘if you want to have fun, let’s have fun in the powder bath.’ That way you don’t have to commit to seeing it every day, and it will be a nice surprise for your guests. Take risks there, and play it safe and neutral in the main bathrooms. So if there’s a tile that stands out to you but you’re having second thoughts because it may be too bold or too colorful, a powder bath is the perfect place to experiment.
The advice I give is to pick a main tile to pull your colors from. So, if you’re using a large-format marble with a lot of movement and a few different colors, you start by breaking those colors out, and pairing them with a subway or penny tile in a coordinating color. I usually stick to three tiles–a main tile, a backsplash tile and a mosaic floor tile.
I love designing kitchens! When people think of kitchens, they usually imagine the traditional look of upper and lower cabinets and maybe an island, but I’m all for the design trend that reduces the amount of cabinetry to create a beautiful space that can be used for entertaining, cooking and working.
I’m renovating my kitchen in Florida and I’m removing half the cabinetry and installing glass shelves with a brass bar back, but I’m still creating storage space. It’s an alternative that allows for a lot of flexibility–you can tile from the counter all the way to the ceiling for a luxe look.
In phase two of my collection, I plan to introduce a carefully veined marble-look tile that coordinates with the other colorways in the collection. I’d also like to design a mosaic that can be used for smaller budget bathroom renovations.
My favorite part of the process is working with The Tile Shop team! They’re fun, clever and so knowledgeable! I love the social team, the photography team. I’ve been blown away with the assets they created. I spent a year and a half developing this product, and it’s been super exciting to see how the marketing team put it all together.
And of course, I love working with Kirsty [Froelich, Director of Design] because she’s so knowledgeable about the company and the customer. She was pivotal in ensuring we had a product that fit with my and The Tile Shop’s brands.

]]>Luxurious and unique, marble takes even a simple design to the next level. This beautiful backsplash designed by Timber Trails features the Firenze Calacatta Amalfi tile to accentuate this space. The use of the white with grey and taupe veined marble with the white cabinets elevates what could be a very basic kitchen design. Check out our 20 Creative Kitchen Backsplash Ideas to Pair With White Cabinets for more kitchen inspo.
If you’re using subway tile for a whole wall, you can create a distinct backsplash moment by mixing glossy and matte finishes. This serene bathroom features the Coco Canvas matte tile with a stripe of the Coco Canvas glossy tile that extends from behind the sink and into the shower. The use of multiple layout designs (vertical and horizontal stacks) creates extra interest, but if this change in direction is making your brain hurt, you can achieve a similar effect with just the use of glossy and matte. The light reflecting off the glossy tiles will create a natural distinction.
Like the neat stacks of subway tile but looking for a modern twist? This elongated hex tile gets its name from the fence posts it resembles. We love how this tile creates naturally fitting off-center stacks. The long Lanse Matte White Picket tile shown here creates length to this bright modern bathroom backsplash, but picket tile comes in a variety of sizes and colors. Shop our full selection of picket tile to find you style.
Everything is in its place in this chic drink station designed by Style Jam. The deep, rich color of the Imperial Kelly Green Bevel gloss tile installed in a neat horizontal stack is accentuated by the contrasting white grout. This tile is contributing a lot to this compact space, the horizontal pattern give this small space the illusion of width and the glossy finish reflects the light for added brightness.
Easy to clean with a reflective surface, glass subway tile is a great choice for a backsplash, particularly if you want to add some light under a counter or range hood. This elegant kitchen designed by Timber Trails features the Antique Mirror Bevel glass subway tile. The reflective surface lends light and glamour to this cooking space. Read more about the design decisions behind this charming house.
Every tile in our Zellige collection is formed, painted and glazed by hand, including the new petite subway tiles like the Zellige Dirty Blue Gloss tile shown here. The slight variations in size, surface texture and color create a backsplash with completely unique character. Shop our full assortment of Zellige tile, or if you like this look, but want a little more reliability in size and texture, shop handmade-look subway tiles.
Part of subway tile’s appeal is the ability to change the style completely depending on which layout you choose. The herringbone pattern is a classic layout that will give your space a sense of movement as it zigs and zags across your backsplash. Choose a long, skinny subway tile, like the Tribeca Gypsum White tile shown here, to add the illusion of length to your space. For more design ideas, check out this guide to 6 Classic Subway Tile Layouts.
Another favorite layout, the straight stack is neat, orderly and very modern. This chic bathroom features the Coco White glossy handmade-look tile. The subtle variations in size, surface texture and coloring add interest, while the vertical stacks create orderly, gridded lines lend a sense of harmony to this space. We love how this design uses a slightly darker grout with the white tiles to accentuate the tidy lines of this design.
If your kitchen backsplash extends behind your stove, you can use your layout design to create distinction between your spaces. This modern kitchen backsplash pairs a classic brick lay tile design with a herringbone design to highlight the cooking space. We love how the herringbone creates movement between the stovetop and range hood, but this layout could also work by mixing a vertical offset with a vertical straight stack or horizontal and vertical stack.
Classic and classy, white subway tile can make for surprising designs. Whether you choose an unexpected layout design, or stick to a basic brick lay, you can create an unexpected backsplash with your grout and accessories. A contrasting black or grey grout will add drama to your design, and you can add dishes or flowers to enliven your space. This subway tile backsplash designed by At Home With Ashley shows how you can use white subway tile as a reprieve from a more colorful space. You can even switch out your accessories with the seasons or your mood!
A dark subway tile with a white grout–or vice-versa–will add instant drama to your space. This sleek and chic modern kitchen uses the Noir Honed Amalfi subway tile with a crisp white grout. The white cabinets and counters keep this space from becoming too dark, but we love how this simple black and white color scheme adds character to this room. Shop our wide selection of pro-rated grout to achieve this look.
Beveled tile’s raised surface will give your space elegant dimension. Even a white beveled subway tile, like the Imperial Bianco Bevel tile used in this elegant kitchen designed by The Wray Design Co., adds a slight quirky element to your design. Shop the Imperial Bevel tiles in all their color ways to get this effect on your backsplash.
Don’t be afraid to get creative with your layout. The alternating horizontal and vertical subway stacks used for this chic kitchen backsplash create a unique and unexpected design. The calming grey tones and reflective surface of the Coco Amber Grey Glossy tile adds brightness and interest to this kitchen. While this design accentuates the high wall, this backsplash idea would also add the illusion of height to a more confined space.

]]>The designer behind Minnesota-based West Bay Homes brought her artfully designed tile collection to life with elegant fluted, mirrored patina and intricate floral designs.
The Inlay Proper by Kelli Fontana features a natural stone look with a bone-inlay-look floral design for an ornate, feminine elegance.
These tiles, available in Naples Beach (above), Florence Lace and Eden Ode (below), can be installed individually or together for artfully designed patterns.
The Florance Lace and Eden Ode are used here to create an elevated checkerboard pattern that is both bold and whimsical. Watch how the tiles beautifully transition from day to night with subtle shifts in tone.
The fluted Tommas Classico and Tommas Carrara by Kelli Fontana will enliven your space with natural dimension and shading. The Tommas Carrara features soft grey veining, while the Tommas Classico has a winter-white surface. A foundational element that will complement a variety of design styles, this stunning, marble-look tile is soft and poetic, while still maintaining a strong presence.
The Thomas Classico by Kelli Fontana fluted tile adds texture to this elegant and inviting dining room wall. The large-format tile requires fewer grout lines, making this wall feel tall and expansive.
The Patina Mirror tile by Kelli Fontana, available in Siren, Eclipse and Gilded, captures the light, transforming your space as the room dims and brightens. The patina finish gives these tiles an antique appearance, blurring the lines between old and new and creating a chic timelessness.
The Patina Gilded Mirror lends a touch of glitz and glamour to this kitchen backsplash. The reflective surface adds a sense of depth, which transforms the space as it transitions from day to night.
The patina tiles are strong enough to function alone, but they also make for a dazzling accent. This pantry uses the Patina Gilded Mirror tile to add shimmer to the design. The patina effect complements the glossy sheen of the Splendours Brown for a sleek, sophisticated space.
We hope you found inspiration to use the timeless pieces from the Kelli Fontana tile collection in your home or business.

]]>Hexagon tile is a vintage look that’s very much on-trend, and the many colors available in our Imperial Collection allow for fun custom designs like this Sienna with Pink flower hexagon tile floor created by The Gold Hive.
The Imperial Slate Blue pencil trim is used to create a beautiful tile frame around the 4-D Nature White tile backsplash. The many trim pieces available in the Imperial Collection mean you can create your own highly-designed moments.
The raised edges of the Imperial Black Frame tile add dimension to this classic subway-shaped tile. The unique detail creates shading for a natural visual texture that makes this jet-black backsplash really pop.
You can’t get any more classic than white subway tile. The Imperial Bianco Gloss Subway tile provides a respite from the busy wallpaper in this fun and funky bathroom designed by Jessica Brigham. We love how she incorporated the Bianco REL tile and black pencil trim, giving the half-wall a finished look.
The many colorways available in the Imperial Collection provide plenty of options to complement your room’s aesthetic. The Imperial Slate Blue Gloss tile shown here pairs elegantly with the Villandry Azure patterned floor tile. Match a solid color Imperial Collection tile with a patterned tile for a beautiful, highly designed space.
One of the great features of the Imperial Collection is that all the tiles in their shapes, finishes and colors, will complement each other. This can make for some wonderfully designed moments, and allow for a wealth of creativity. This gorgeous Imperial white and pink hexagon backsplash using precision cut tiles is possible because the tiles perfectly match in size and finish.

]]>What is Zellige tile? Crafted in Morocco, each of these tiles is shaped and glazed by hand resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind look. These tiles come in a variety of colors and shapes, including the popular star and cross shapes, bringing old-world charm to contemporary design.
Available in alabaster, black, dark grey, light grey and white, each of these 4″ x 4″ square tiles is handcrafted creating naturally uneven lines and variances in surface color. The effect on these walls is absolutely stunning! These handmade Moroccan tiles are great for creating an unexpected moment like this recessed shelf or to liven up a kitchen backsplash (below). These tiles are also available in 2″ x 6″ rectangles and 2″ x 2″ square mosaic.
This classic Zellige pattern will transform your space with old-world sophistication. Install the cross and stars in contrasting finishes for a unique, but subtle pattern, as shown here with gloss crosses and matte stars.
Do you like the look of handmade tiles, but want a little more continuity? Get the unique character of handmade tiles with less variance in color and size (and a lower price-point) with handmade-look tiles.
These 4″ x 4″ square tiles–available in white, sand and grey–mimic the square Zellige tiles, with uneven edges and variation in color and surface texture, but the differences are not quite as pronounced as in the true handmade tiles. If you like your lines a little more straight and your color a little more uniform, you can’t go wrong with the Riad tile. We love how Rachael Jackson used the Riad White and Grey to create a stunning checkerboard pattern in her kitchen remodel.
The Splendours takes subway tile up a notch with perfectly imperfect character. This tile comes in a variety of colors (as well as the traditional white) to suit your style. For an added twist on a classic subway, try the elongated-hex-shaped picket tile.
The Marrakesh tiles will add a wonderful sense of movement to your walls. Available in white, blue and green, the natural color variation in the tiles makes for beautiful kitchen backsplashes (as evidenced below) but we also love how ISPYDIY created a checkerboard pattern for their shower wall.
Available in dark blues, green and white, the Look elongated handmade-look subway tile comes in bold colors with an artisanal appearance that will add texture and charm to your space. We love how the variations in color add character to this kitchen island.
The slight shade variation in the Track Stack mosaic tiles creates an artisanal look even as the long thin tiles align with beautiful symmetry. If you’re loving this look, check out the Track Stack Navy Blue tiles.
The Annie Selke Artisanal Blue tile shown used in this shower features slightly uneven surfaces for a handcrafted look and unique charm. The slight imperfections add character, but this tile is still even enough to create almost straight lines.
Embrace quiet luxury with the Argile matte subway tile. The slight variations in tone and texture create a handcrafted look that pairs well with the soft, marble-look Livingstone Melange tile.

]]>The post How One Tile Installer Built a Brand Trusted by Pros appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>After a simple conversation with a friend and fellow trade professional revealed a gap in the market, a new business idea sparked for longtime tile setter Chase Twitchell. With 19+ years of industry experience under his belt, he knew firsthand how drain systems for tiled showers could be improved, making everyday installation jobs easier for people like himself and his peers. Thus, the idea for FloFX was born. Marketed as a brand “by an installer, for installers,” FloFX offers products like advanced bonding flange drains and premium grates that only continue to grow in popularity among professionals in the tile community.
Keep reading to learn more about tile installer-turned-FloFX founder, Chase Twitchell, and his fascinating story!
I grew up in a small town in Southern Utah with a single mom of 5 kids. As a teenager, I got my start in the flooring trade by spending the summers with my brother, a 3rd generation floor coverings installer. Fresh out of high school, I knew I wanted to get into the tile trade. I started as a helper for a company doing custom tile work and quickly got promoted to tile setter. A few years later, I thought I was ready to go out on my own and got my tile contractor’s license at 21. I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn! 19 years later, I’m still learning new things every day.
I was talking to one of my good friends, Rod Katwyk, Owner of RodKat Custom Shower Trays, about his products and the shower drains he was using. He had a few options from some of the bigger manufacturers, but nothing that was really a perfect fit for his application. After this conversation and seeing the current offerings, I knew I could make something better. That’s when I set out to create the Universal Bond Flange Kit. With a universal outlet, it’s ready for whatever you show up to on a jobsite. Sometimes you’ll need to connect to a bare 2” waste pipe and other times you’ll need to adapt to an existing 3-piece clamping drain. Our universal kit is like 2 drain kits in one.
The concept started in my garage with a grinder and a piece of sheet metal. I didn’t have access to a welder, so hot glue held the poorly cut pieces of metal together just long enough for me to realize that it was a horrible idea. It solved almost no problems and carried over all the issues installers face when installing stainless linear drains – most notably, bent flanges in shipping and having to use a no-hub/rubber boot for the waste pipe connection. I quickly realized that plastic injection molding was the way to go. It brings repeatability, durability and enhanced geometry not available with stamped sheet metal. However – I had zero experience with 3D design or plastic prototyping at this time.
So, after spending the next weekend banging my head on the keyboard trying to learn the basics of a 3D design program and eventually finding a deal on Facebook Marketplace for a 3D printer, I loaded my first design and waited… 24 hours later, I was holding my 1st 3D printed prototype. And it was garbage.
I spent the next year making revision after revision. Each version a little better than the last. Learn a new 3D design technique – make a new revision – print another prototype. 3D printing really was the game changer. Being able to hold and feel your prototype to see how the parts interact with each other was key to making a good product.
The current Universal Bond Flange Kit has around 78 revisions. It was finally good enough.
The biggest advantage we have is our installer-centric focus. I’m positive that I wouldn’t have been able to make a product that has been so well reviewed without my experience setting tile. Every part of the design was built around the installation first. I knew that it had to be something that I would want to install myself.
The under-flange mortar cavities lock the flange into the setting material for a rock-solid installation. The universal outlet sets you up for almost any drain connection you need to make and the kits come with all the grate install components giving you everything you need to install tile and grout without needing the actual grate kit in order to complete the installation. Not to mention, both versions of our drain kits offer horizontal grate adjustment to nail the tile layout with designs that prevent mosaics from sagging around the grate.
I love talking to and meeting installers, especially when they have a problem that I can offer a quick and easy solution to. I love seeing some of the epic projects that FloFX has been used on! 2 out of 3 finalists for Floor Covering Installer Magazine’s Best Shower Award were using FloFX drains in 2022. I’m humbled to have that caliber of installers using our products.
Make connections as soon as you can. Find a mentor that can answer questions and give you advice when you get stuck. As a tile contractor, I know people who are smarter than me that I could call for advice, and I don’t think I could have made it without them. The same goes for my role with FloFX.
This is a tough one because I’ve made friends with so many good people that I look up to in the industry that I would feel horrible If I left even a single one out. This is an awesome industry that I’m very fortunate to be a part of.
The biggest thing I’ll be focusing on in 2023 is building out a team to help take FloFX to the next level. I’m currently handling all areas of the business on my own – everything from sales and marketing to inventory and accounting. Bringing in people who are better than me at some of those things will free up my time to focus more on the things I excel at. We’ll be able to have better products, better marketing, better service and a better business overall. The future is bright!
Living in Southern Utah, we’re blessed with the beautiful outdoors. I spend a lot of my free time outside. Racing dirt bikes, mountain biking and fishing take up most of my free time when I’m not playing competitive slow-pitch softball.

]]>Inspired by one of the first DIY projects they tackled in their new North Carolina Modern Colonial home – a custom penny round floor pattern for the powder room – Julia created a similar look in this space with 1″ hex tiles made of matte black porcelain and Hampton Carrara marble.
This tile project ended up being the most intricate but also one of the most beautiful tile jobs we have done in a home.
–Julia Marcum
So, aside from walls lined in Hampton Carrara subway tile and the striking custom floor pattern, what is it that elevates this bathroom from beautiful to breathtaking? Trim. Trim. And more trim. While these small tile accents may seem subtle, this design proves how much impact they really can have. The sleek black pencil liner draws the eye throughout the space and offers the perfect amount of contrast, while the marble durand adorns walls with dimension and interest in the form of elegant box trim.
